Turn up for brunch in Malaga at four and most kitchens are already closed. By then Concept 30, on Calle Hoyo de Esparteros, has stopped cooking at 3.15pm and Brunchit at 3.30pm, even though both opened at 9am. The exception is Byoko, on Plaza de la Merced, which serves its 15.20 and 19.50-euro brunch sets from 8.30am to 10pm and is the only one that takes a booking.

Brunch in Malaga is a mid-morning meal of eggs, toast and speciality coffee that costs 12 to 20 euros a head and starts at 8.30am or 9am. The places with their own published menus are all in the old town, around Plaza de la Merced, Calle Carretería, the Atarazanas market and the Soho, less than 1 kilometre apart.
When brunch is served, and when it stops
The cut-off matters more than the opening. Concept 30 opens daily from 9am to 4.30pm with the kitchen closing at 3.15pm, Brunchit from 9am to 4pm with the kitchen until 3.30pm, and Santa Coffee Soho serves brunch until 4pm. Byoko calls its menu “non stop” and serves every brunch set at any hour, until 10pm, or 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday.

- Arrive before 3pm at any walk-in place; after 3.15pm, only Byoko and Santa Coffee Soho are still serving.
- Book Byoko for a group, since it is the only one taking reservations.
- Go to La Desayunería or The Golden Stack if someone is coeliac.

What brunch costs in Malaga
Byoko is the only one that publishes fixed sets. Healthy Morning, with coffee or tea, a bowl and juice, costs 15.20 euros; Brunch Style, with coffee or tea, toast or baked eggs and a mini bowl, 19.50; and Privilege, for 2 people, 54. Swapping the coffee for a latte adds 2.50 euros.
At Santa Coffee Soho, at Calle Tomás Heredia 5, brunch dishes such as the salmon brioche with fried eggs cost 10.90 to 11.50 euros, and orange juice with coffee, tea or an infusion adds 5 euros. La Desayunería, at Calle Atarazanas 10, serves American breakfasts from 7.95 to 14.95 euros. Brunchit and Concept 30 publish no prices online.
Booking, or joining the queue
Byoko has table booking on its website. Brunchit tells customers to “come and see us without a booking”, and Concept 30 states it is walk-in only. At Next Level, on Calle Panaderos 14, rated 4.8 from 133 TripAdvisor reviews, the recurring complaint is the queue outside.
Brunchit has 5 branches in the centre, including Carretería 46 and Alcazabilla 15, so if one is full another is a few minutes away. The reviews carry two warnings: Byoko scores 4.2 from 226 TripAdvisor reviews, with complaints about price and slow service, and Brunchit Carretería, at 4.5 from over 2,300, has reviews describing a 45-minute wait after ordering.
Gluten-free, vegan and with kids
La Desayunería makes pancakes in classic, vegan or gluten-free batter and has gluten-free bread. The Golden Stack, at Avenida Gregorio Prieto 19 in Teatinos, makes pancakes with gluten-free flour, lactose-free or vegan. Where the brunch places are
Byoko is on Plaza de la Merced and on Calle Strachan, off Calle Larios; Brunchit Carretería at the northern edge of the old town; Concept 30, La Desayunería and Next Level around the Atarazanas market; and Santa Coffee in the Soho.
