Want a Spanish village Christmas without hiring a car? Nerja's living nativity, with over 100 residents in costume, runs on the Sunday before Christmas and the last bus back leaves at 21:55. Antequera's free town nativity and Christmas House work on any December day, an hour inland. Torrox, about 7 kilometres away, holds its Migas festival on that same Sunday.

You can walk all of Comares in a morning: its Moorish Route is a 1.5 km loop from the main square, and no stop is over 310 metres away. The catch is getting there, since the bus named after the village never reaches it, so this is a day for a hire car, a 436-metre zip line and lunch on the square.

Three resorts on one train line, three trade-offs. Fuengirola is the cheapest hotel base in 11 of 12 months, at €92.73 a room night, but sits 46 minutes from Málaga. Torremolinos costs the most, €126.99, and is 11 minutes from the airport. Benalmádena's only station is 1,458 metres from the beach.

An afternoon is enough for Puerto Banús, a marina 6.9 km from the old town. The direct L-313 bus leaves Málaga at 2.15pm and heads back at 10.13pm; driving into the marina costs 185 euros a day, the Saba car park outside has 1,066 spaces, and Gold, on the quay, adds 10 percent service to every bill.

Fuengirola works better as a holiday base than as a sightseeing stop: trains reach Malaga Airport in 34 minutes and run until 12.20am, four Blue Flag beaches line 7 kilometres of coast and Mijas Pueblo is 25 minutes uphill by bus. Its heritage sites, Sohail Castle included, all close on Mondays.

Without a car, Sunday decides the trip: the C-2 train gives you over 14 hours in Álora and the bus more than 11 in Torre del Mar, while Almogía has no ride back at all. Mijas works at weekends only through Fuengirola, and the bus line named after Comares stops short of it, at Olías.

Which return you book decides whether Ronda is a visit or a photo of the gorge. The last direct coach back leaves at 6.30pm on weekdays and 8pm at weekends, the coastal one at 6.35pm after more than three hours on the road, and the train back connects at Antequera for Málaga by 7.59pm.

Twelve services each way from Monday to Saturday and seven on Sundays and public holidays, so the last one down is not what breaks the day. On a Sunday the service stops for three and a half hours in the middle, and the last departure stretches to 10pm between 1 July and 31 August.
