Fuengirola, Torremolinos or Benalmadena, best Málaga base

Three resorts on one train line, three trade-offs. Fuengirola is the cheapest hotel base in 11 of 12 months, at €92.73 a room night, but sits 46 minutes from Málaga. Torremolinos costs the most, €126.99, and is 11 minutes from the airport. Benalmádena's only station is 1,458 metres from the beach.

Land at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport after 11pm and the choice of resort stops being a matter of taste. The last C-1 train towards the coast leaves the airport station at 23:42: it is in Torremolinos at 23:53, in Benalmádena at 00:01 and in Fuengirola at 00:16. Miss it and the three are a taxi ride away, and Fuengirola, 34 minutes down the line, is the longest of those rides.

Fuengirola, Torremolinos or Benalmádena, which is the best base without a car? Torremolinos for access, 11 minutes from the airport and 23 from Málaga by train. Fuengirola for price, the cheapest hotel base in 11 of 12 months at €92.73 a room night. Benalmádena sits in between, but its only station is 1,458 metres from the nearest beach.

All three are resort towns on the western Costa del Sol, strung along one suburban railway, the Cercanías Málaga C-1, which Renfe runs from Málaga city through the airport to Fuengirola with 52 trains on weekdays and 49 at weekends. Each has Blue Flag beaches. What separates them is three numbers: the room rate in your month, the minutes to Málaga, and how far the station is from the sand.

Which is cheapest for a hotel, and in which months

Fuengirola is the cheapest of the three in 11 of the last 12 months published by Spain’s statistics institute, the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), which surveys hotels in each resort for its average daily room rate. The exception is December, when Benalmádena charged €74.94 and Fuengirola €81.19. Torremolinos is the dearest in all 12 months.

Torremolinos€86.90€119.54€190.52€208.50€126.99

These are averages per occupied room per night, across every hotel category, not per person and not a quote for a given hotel. They are good for comparing towns in the same month, which is the decision here.

Multiply by seven and the summer gap becomes real money. An August week at the average rate costs €950.46 in Fuengirola, €1,345.68 in Benalmádena and €1,459.50 in Torremolinos, a difference of €509.04 for the same week on the same train line. Over Fuengirola, Benalmádena adds €358.26 in July and €395.22 in August, and Torremolinos €464.87 and €509.04.

The month-by-month curve, with Málaga city alongside, is in Málaga hotel prices by month.

How long the train takes to the airport and to Málaga

From the airport station the C-1 takes 11 minutes to Torremolinos, 19 to Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel and 34 to Fuengirola, on the timetable Renfe publishes. To the centre of Málaga, at Centro-Alameda, the times are 23, 32 and 46 minutes. There are trains every 20 minutes for most of the day. Getting from the city to everything else is in getting around Málaga.

When the last train from Málaga airport reaches Torremolinos, Benalmádena and FuengirolaThe last C-1 train towards the coast leaves the airport station at 23:42. It reaches Torremolinos at 23:53, Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel at 00:01 and Fuengirola at 00:16, so a late landing hurts Fuengirola most.Torremolinos23:53 · 11 minBenalmádena00:01 · 19 minFuengirola00:16 · 34 minLeaves the airport station at 23:42Arrives in townRenfe C-1 timetable, the same on weekdays and weekends
All three get the same last train: what changes is whether you are in bed before or after midnight.

For an early flight, the first train reaching the airport arrives at 06:43. It leaves Fuengirola at 06:10, Benalmádena at 06:23 and Torremolinos at 06:33, so a flight that needs you at the airport before about 7am leaves the first train with no margin.

You pay by tapping a contactless card at the gate, and Renfe charges the maximum fare if you do not tap out at the other end. The airport options in more detail are in Málaga airport to the coast, and which stop serves which part of each town is in the Málaga west coast train.

Can you walk from the station to the beach

In Torremolinos and Fuengirola, yes; in Benalmádena, not really. Torremolinos station is 448 metres in a straight line from El Bajondillo beach. Fuengirola station, at the end of the line, is 522 metres from Fuengirola beach.

Benalmádena’s only station, Arroyo de la Miel, is inland: 1,458 metres from the nearest beach, about 20 minutes on foot, and 2.2 kilometres from Puerto Marina, the marina. A seafront hotel in Benalmádena Costa means the train is a bus or taxi away; a hotel by the station means the beach is.

Benalmádena is the only one of the three where the station is a real walk from the sea, so a seafront hotel there means a bus, a taxi or 20 minutes on foot.

Which suits families, couples or a night out

Families on a budget: Fuengirola. It is the cheapest in July, at €124.11 a room night against €175.29 in Benalmádena and €190.52 in Torremolinos, and Bioparc, the zoo, is 600 metres from the station at €29.50 for an adult, as set out in Bioparc Fuengirola from Málaga. Benalmádena’s answer is the cable car near Arroyo de la Miel, from €17.90 online, in the Benalmádena cable car.

Couples who want Málaga as well as a beach: Torremolinos. Twenty-three minutes each way leaves time for dinner in the city and the 23:30 train back, which reaches Torremolinos at 23:53.

A night out without the city: Torremolinos again. The Clarence Jazz Club is at calle Danza Invisible 8, as listed in live music in Málaga, and late dinners are sorted in where to eat in Torremolinos, including which places have a menu in English.

How much English you will hear, and who else stays there

Comfortably, in all three. About four in five hotel nights in each resort are bought by people who live outside Spain: 80.3 percent in Fuengirola, 80.0 percent in Benalmádena and 78.9 percent in Torremolinos over the last 12 months, according to the INE’s hotel occupancy survey.

Stays run long. The average hotel guest spends 5.22 nights in Benalmádena, 4.79 in Torremolinos and 4.43 in Fuengirola, and Torremolinos is the biggest by far, with 5.57 million hotel nights a year against 2.58 million in Fuengirola. The full ranking is in the busiest Costa del Sol resorts.

What you might not like about each town

  • Torremolinos is the most expensive in every month and the busiest, so it does not suit anyone after a small, quiet place.
  • Benalmádena splits into three centres, keeps its station away from the sea and is almost full in August, at 95 percent of rooms sold.
  • Fuengirola is the end of the line: 46 minutes each way to Málaga, which adds 46 minutes a day over Torremolinos for anyone sightseeing in the city. Its castle, the Castillo Sohail, is 1.9 kilometres from the station and shuts on Mondays, as covered in things to do in Fuengirola.

Which town for three typical trips

Each answer prices 7 nights at the INE average room rate for the month of the trip, on the C-1 timetable Renfe runs every day of the week.

  1. A family of four in July, no car, beach every day: Fuengirola. Seven nights at the July average cost €868.77, against €1,227.03 in Benalmádena and €1,333.64 in Torremolinos, and the beach and the zoo are both within 600 metres of the train.
  2. A couple splitting the week between Málaga’s museums and the beach: Torremolinos. Move the trip from August to May and the week drops from €1,459.50 to €836.78. What opens in the town’s own old quarter is in Torremolinos old town.
  3. A long winter stay on a budget: Benalmádena. December is the one month it undercuts Fuengirola, at €74.94 a room night, or €524.58 for seven nights, and in winter the walk from the station to the sea matters less.
