Timings from the last two editions. There are 5,000 bags of grapes and 5,000 party bags, handed out until they run out.

How the twelve grapes work

At midnight Spaniards eat one grape for each of the twelve chimes, one per month of the coming year, for luck. The chimes come fast, so it is harder than it sounds. In Malaga the city’s grape bags hold exactly twelve. There are 5,000 bags of grapes and 5,000 of party favours, with hats, streamers, masks and garlands, given out from 9 pm to 11:45 pm until they run out, so arrive before 11 pm if you want one.

What the party is like

The format has been the same in the last two editions. A band plays from 11 pm; a few minutes before midnight it stops, and the square’s clock rings in the New Year while a multimedia show is projected around the square, with 75,000 watts of lighting in the 2024 edition. Then the music starts again until 1:30 am. The band and the final programme are announced in the last days of December.

Dinner, drinks and the rest of the night

Dinner is the part to book. Many locals eat at home with family on the 31st and go out after the grapes; if you want a restaurant that night, reserve well ahead; menus with prices, from 120 to 195 euros, are in Christmas dinner in Málaga. Before the party, the rooftop bars have views over the lit-up old town, and after it, the nightlife areas guide and La Merced after dark, a seven-minute walk from the square, cover where to carry on. Note that the Calle Larios light show runs without music on the 31st.

What is open on 31 December and 1 January

On 31 December the major museums, the Roman Theatre and the Cathedral open only until 3 pm, and on 1 January all seven close. The full table is in the Christmas closures guide, and for a free morning on the 1st, try the free things to do in Malaga.

Getting back to your hotel

If you are staying in the old town, walk: the square is at the top of the 370-metre Calle Larios, about 250 metres from the Cathedral. Otherwise, EMT, the city bus company, publishes its special night service for 31 December to 1 January around 26 December. A single city bus ticket costs €1.40; taxis and the rest of the network are in getting around Malaga. The old town is busy that night, so keep phones and wallets out of back pockets.

What might not suit you

It is a packed square in the old town, standing, at midnight: with small children, the side streets are easier than the middle of the square. The grape bags do not stretch to everyone. And if you want a sit-down dinner with a party, that is a restaurant or hotel booking, with its own price.

For the rest of the season, see Christmas in Malaga, and five days later the centre fills again for the Three Kings parade.
