The thing that catches visitors out is the calendar. In Spain the big family meal is Nochebuena, dinner on the 24th, and on the 25th most people eat at home, so restaurants that open on Christmas Day rarely publish a menu for it. Among central Málaga restaurants with 2026 menus online, only Vino Mío serves a Christmas Day lunch. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are easier: there is a choice from 85 to 195 euros a head.
Where can I eat on Christmas Day in Málaga? Vino Mío, on Plaza Jerónimo Cuervo by the Teatro Cervantes, serves a 120-euro lunch on 25 December, with seating from 14:00 to 14:30 and the table yours until 17:00. For Christmas Eve, Eurostars Málaga charges 85 euros and Terraza Catedral 140 on its rooftop, both with children’s prices.
How Spanish Christmas eating works, for visitors
- Dinner is late. Ordinary dinner starts around 21:00; Christmas sittings at 18:00 exist for visitors and families with children.
- Menus are fixed. On these dates you get a set menu at a set price, not the usual card, and the table has a sitting time.
- Tipping is optional. Prices include tax; leaving a few euros is a kindness, not an obligation.
- The 25th and 1 January are quiet. Most shops and museums close; check Málaga museums at Christmas before planning a day out.
Who serves which day
Vino Mío covers all three dates with one 120.00-euro menu: pumpkin cream with caviar, salmon sashimi, then sea bass or pork cheek. Dinners run in two sittings, 18:00 and 21:30; on the 31st there is live music and grapes at midnight, and there is no flamenco on these nights.
Terraza Catedral, on Plaza del Siglo beside the Cathedral, serves Christmas Eve dinner on its rooftop for 140.00 euros, 70.00 euros for children, with tuna tartare and scallops, beef tenderloin or sea bass, and free-flowing drinks for 90 minutes. On New Year’s Eve the Terraza charges 160.00 euros, with grapes, party favours and 4 drinks.
Eurostars Málaga, a hotel on Calle Héroe de Sostoa, is the cheapest Christmas Eve option: 85.00 euros, children 40.00 euros. You pay up front, and from 9 December cancellation costs the full price. Its New Year’s Eve gala is 160.00 euros, 60.00 euros for children.
La Máquina publishes only New Year’s Eve: 195.00 euros, 75.00 euros up to age 12, with Perrier-Jouët champagne, grapes and party favours, seating between 20:00 and 21:15. The free street party with the midnight chimes is in New Year’s Eve in Málaga.
Christmas sweets to take home
The local Christmas sweets are borrachuelos, roscos, pestiños, mantecados and aceitado. For turrón, Casa Mira has two shops, at Calle Larios 5 and Calle Císter 8. Old-school bakeries and what to order are in traditional Málaga patisseries, and the ring cake for 6 January, which needs ordering ahead, in Roscón de Reyes in Málaga.
What it costs for two
For two adults, Christmas Eve runs from 170 euros at the Eurostars to 240 at Vino Mío and 280 on the Terraza Catedral roof; New Year’s Eve from 240 at Vino Mío to 320 on the roof or at the hotel and 390 at La Máquina. A family of two adults and two children pays 250 euros on the 24th at the hotel and 420 euros on the rooftop.
When to book, and what might put you off
Book in November: sittings are fixed, covers are limited and some places take payment up front. The drawback is the format itself, a set menu at a fixed hour for roughly double a normal dinner. On an ordinary December day you eat better for less: see where to eat in Málaga, and for the evening around dinner, Christmas in Málaga for couples.
