Christmas in Málaga for couples, what to book and when

Sunset from Gibralfaro is free if you watch it from the viewpoint outside the walls, because the castle shuts first. Christmas Day is the tricky one for couples: museums close, but the Soho theatre puts on a Banderas musical at 19:00 and street concerts go on. A light trail is 17 euros for two. A one-hour harbour catamaran starts at 9 euros a head.

For a couple, Christmas in Málaga is an evening plan, and a short one. In December the sun sets at about 18:01 early in the month and 18:10 by the 31st, Gibralfaro castle closes at 18:00 with last entry at 17:00, and the light show on Calle Larios starts at 18:30. Plan around those three times. The few paid extras, a garden light trail or the Teatro del Soho musical with Antonio Banderas, need a booking.

Is Málaga a good place for a couple at Christmas? Yes. Climb Gibralfaro before the 17:00 last entry, watch sunset from the free viewpoint outside the walls at around 18:05, then walk down for the 18:30 Calle Larios light show. On another night, the Jardín de Oz light trail costs 17 euros for two on its half-price nights.

Per-person prices doubled: catamaran from 9 euros (night trip from 25, over-18s only), Alcazaba and Gibralfaro joint ticket 10 euros, Jardín de Oz 15.50 euros or 8.50 on half-price nights.

Jardín de Oz is the light trail at La Concepción botanical garden, from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with entry from 18:30 to 21:30 every 15 minutes. Adults pay 15.50 euros, but on the half-price nights of 30 November, 9, 14, 21 and 28 December and 6 January it drops to 8.50 euros. It goes ahead in rain unless there is an orange weather warning. EMT bus 2 to Ciudad Jardín connects with a shuttle; parking costs 2.00 euros. The garden by day is in La Concepción botanical garden.

The bay by boat. Mundo Marino runs 1-hour catamaran trips from Muelle Uno from 9.00 euros, and a night cruise with music from 25.00 euros, over-18s only; more in Málaga boat trips. Hammam Al Ándalus, the Arab baths on Plaza de los Mártires, takes bookings only and gives 25 % off to residents of the province: what a session involves is in Hammam Al Ándalus.

The evening, hour by hour

A December evening for two in Málaga, hour by hourGibralfaro castle takes its last visitors at 17:00 and closes at 18:00; sunset in December falls between about 18:02 and 18:15; the Jardín de Oz light trail admits visitors from 18:30 to 21:30; the Calle Larios light show ran at 18:30, 20:30 and 22:00; the free concerts in Plaza de la Constitución were at 19:00 and 20:30; the Soho theatre Christmas musical starts at 19:00 from 25 to 27 December 2026.16:0017:0018:0019:0020:0021:0022:0023:00sunsetGibralfaro last entryGibralfaro closesJardín de Oz entryCalle Larios light showFree carol concertsSoho theatre, 25-27 DecCalle Larios and concert times: last season. Sunset: our own calculation.
Sunset comes after the castle has shut, so watch it from the free viewpoint outside the walls, then walk down for the 18:30 show on Calle Larios.

Go up first. In winter the Alcazaba and the castle keep the same hours, 9:00 to 18:00, and a ticket costs 7.00 euros, or 10.00 euros for both, free on Sundays from 14:00: see the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro combined ticket.

The castle shuts before the sun goes down, so the sunset is from the Gibralfaro viewpoint on the road outside, open at all hours. Times through the year are in Málaga sunset times.

It is a 20-minute walk down to Calle Larios for the 18:30 show. Last season there were runs at 20:30 and 22:00 too, and on 24 and 31 December and 5 January the lights came on without the music: dates are in Málaga’s Christmas lights. Dinner starts late here, from about 21:00, so the 20:30 show fits neatly before a table; where to book one is in where to eat in Málaga.

Christmas Day for two, when the city shuts

The 25th is the day visitors get wrong. Museums close, and so do most shops; the list of what shuts is in Málaga museums at Christmas. What still works:

  • The street. The lights stay on, and last season the free Música en Navidad concerts in Plaza de la Constitución ran from 20 to 29 December at 19:00 and 20:30, the 25th included.
  • The Soho theatre. Navidad en el Soho: un cuento musical, with Antonio Banderas and the Larios Pop orchestra, plays on 25, 26 and 27 December 2026 at 19:00 at Calle Córdoba 13. Tickets are sold on the theatre’s site.
  • Lunch. Few restaurants publish a Christmas Day lunch; the ones that do, with prices, are in Christmas dinner in Málaga.

When to go, and what might put you off

Weekdays in the first half of December are the sweet spot: lights on, two half-price nights at the Jardín de Oz on the 9th and 14th, and less of a crush than the long weekend around 6 and 8 December.

Getting in from the airport takes a train or the express bus, compared in Málaga airport to the city centre. Keep your phone in a front pocket on Calle Larios at show time.

The downsides: Larios at 20:30 on a Saturday is shoulder to shoulder, and the Jardín de Oz is out of the centre, so it needs a bus or a taxi both ways. Year-round ideas are in Málaga for couples, and the rest of the season in Christmas in Málaga.

Christmas in Málaga for couples, FAQ

Is Málaga romantic at Christmas?

Yes, and mostly for free: the Calle Larios light show runs three times a night, sunset over the port can be watched from the Gibralfaro viewpoint, and there are free concerts in Plaza de la Constitución. Paid extras include the Jardín de Oz light trail and a Christmas musical at the Soho theatre.

What can a couple do in Málaga on Christmas Day?

Most museums close on 25 December, but the street lights stay on, last season there was a free concert in Plaza de la Constitución that day, and in 2026 the Soho theatre stages Antonio Banderas’s Christmas musical at 19:00 on the 25th, 26th and 27th.

Can you watch the sunset from Gibralfaro castle in December?

Not from inside. In winter the last entry is at 17:00 and the castle closes at 18:00, while the sun sets between about 18:01 and 18:15. Watch it from the free Gibralfaro viewpoint on the road up, outside the walls.

How much is the Jardín de Oz Christmas light trail?

In 2026-27 adult tickets cost 15.50 euros, or 8.50 euros on the half-price nights of 30 November, 9, 14, 21 and 28 December and 6 January. Entry runs from 18:30 to 21:30 in 15-minute slots.
