The line repeated on every list of Malaga viewpoints is that the fortresses always close before the sun goes down. It is nearly true, and the exception is a full month long.

Every other month the gap runs the wrong way. June closes 91 minutes before sunset, May 66, January 12. December comes closest, with an 18:00 closing time against an 18:01 sunset on the 3rd.
Two dates that do not line up
This window exists because of a mismatch nobody advertises. The monument’s summer season ends on 31 October. The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, which in 2026 is the 25th.
For those final days the site keeps its long summer hours while the evening has already shortened by an hour. That is the mismatch, and it resets every year: the clock change always lands in the last week of October, and the monument always holds its 20:00 closing until the 31st.

Two rows deserve a second look before booking flights. A December afternoon in Malaga is dark by 18:03, which is a short day in a place people picture as sunny. And a June evening runs to 21:38, which pushes dinner and everything after it later than most visitors plan for.
”Last pass” is not the closing time
Spanish monuments sell a último pase, a last admission, and at the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro it falls a full hour before the gates shut: 19:00 in summer and 17:00 in winter.
That hour is where October trips fail. Turning up at 19:30 on 20 October finds a site that is open, a sunset due at 19:35 and a ticket desk that stopped selling half an hour earlier. Treat 19:00 as the deadline and 20:00 as the eviction.
The desk charges 7.00 euros for one monument and 10.00 euros for the combined ticket, with reduced entry at 3.00 euros and 5.00 euros. Two exemptions matter here: under sixes pay nothing, and so does everyone on Sundays from 14:00, which in October falls squarely across the sunset hour. What the table cannot tell you
The Instituto Geográfico Nacional defines sunset as the moment the upper edge of the Sun disappears “en un horizonte hipotético en que no se considera el relieve del horizonte real”, a hypothetical horizon that ignores the real terrain, and warns that obstacles bring it forward.
In Málaga, a city with a hill in the middle of it, that matters. The published hour is a ceiling rather than the moment the light goes: hemmed in by buildings, or with the Gibralfaro slope to the west, the sun disappears earlier. Build in a margin instead of arriving on the minute.
For an October evening inside the walls, the order is fixed:
- Check the date against 25 October, because the clock change is what creates the margin.
- Buy before 19:00, which is the last pass and not the closing time.
- Go on a Sunday if you can, since entry is free from 14:00 and that covers the sunset hour.
- Subtract ten minutes from the printed hour, because the hill takes the sun early.
