The plan that appears at the top of every romantic list in this city is not currently available. Malaga cathedral has suspended its rooftop visits because of works on the roof, and its own website says so plainly. That leaves the evening to be built from the ground, which turns out to be a question of timing rather than of taste, because the centre closes in a staggered order that catches most people out.
What is there to do in Malaga as a couple in the evening? The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro on a €10 combined ticket, entered before last admission, then a museum that runs late. The Museo de Málaga closes at 21:00 and costs €1.50. The cathedral rooftops, the most recommended option of all, are suspended for building works.

The rooftops are shut, the cathedral is not

It is worth knowing what it involves, because it was never a gentle stroll. The climb is roughly 200 steps up a narrow spiral staircase, about 50 metres of ascent, and guided only, with no wandering off from the group. Tripods, rucksacks, baby carriers, carried children and food are all barred, the cathedral advises against it for anyone with vertigo, claustrophobia, reduced mobility, breathing difficulty or in advanced pregnancy, and the whole thing is cancelled in bad weather.
Everything else inside the building is running normally. The cultural visit costs €10 with an audio guide in ten languages, €9 over 65, €7 for students aged 18 to 25 and groups from 15 people, and €6 from 13 to 17. A version bundled with a 360° virtual reality experience costs €15, and a guided tour adds €5 to the standard ticket.
Opening runs 10:00 to 18:30 Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays and the eve of public holidays, and 14:00 to 18:00 on Sundays and holy days of obligation. The rest of the year is set out in Malaga cathedral.
Last admission is not closing time
The Alcazaba de Málaga and the Castillo de Gibralfaro are where couples lose an evening without realising. They close at 18:00 from 1 November to 31 March, but last admission is at 17:00. Between 1 April and 31 October they close at 20:00 with last admission at 19:00. An hour of margin, both times.
The cathedral works the same way, closing its ticket desk 45 minutes before the door and clearing the building 10 minutes ahead of it.

The discounts that apply to you, and the ones that do not
The headline concessions in Malaga are not all aimed at visitors, and the difference is worth €20.
Free admission at the cathedral is for Málaga residents, along with people with a disability and under-13s. A visiting couple pays the full €20 between them, and no amount of asking changes that.
What does apply to a visitor is narrower and more useful:
- The Museo de Málaga charges nothing to EU citizens and €1.50 to everyone else — the cheapest big museum in the city either way.

Two plans that hold up on any evening
The first is the Museo de Málaga, in the Palacio de la Aduana, open 9:00 to 21:00 from Tuesday to Saturday at €1.50 and free to EU citizens. Twelve straight hours of margin, and by the end of the evening it is close to empty. What it holds is in the Museo de Málaga.
The second is flamenco, because it starts when everything else has shut. The weekday changes the plan more than the season
Two weekly closures are enough to ruin a badly chosen evening. The Centre Pompidou closes on Tuesdays, and the Carmen Thyssen and the Museo de Málaga close on Mondays. A Monday evening in the centre rules out two of the three options that reach 20:00.
Sundays run the other way. The cathedral opens 14:00 to 18:00 only, because holy days of obligation get the afternoon timetable, while Picasso’s birthplace enters its free window at 16:00.
