Line C1 links Málaga airport with Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola in under 35 minutes for less than three euros. A flight landing at half past eleven at night can still reach central Malaga by train, and can no longer reach a hotel in Fuengirola. The airport’s last coast-bound departure is 23:42; its last city-bound one is 00:54. Those 72 minutes are the single most useful thing to know before booking a first night on the Costa del Sol, and no timetable board in the arrivals hall puts the two directions side by side.

Four destinations sit within an hour of the terminal and they do not work the same way. Torremolinos is 11 minutes and €1.80 down the line, Benalmádena 19 minutes and €2.05, Fuengirola 34 minutes and €2.70. Marbella is the outlier, and not by distance: it has no railway station, so the trip is a 45-minute coach or a metered taxi, and the coach desk inside the terminal keeps office hours.

Three of the four fares are printed on a machine and one is not. The train charges between €1.80 and €2.70 depending on how far down the line you go, the coach to Marbella starts at €6.48, and a taxi leaving the terminal never starts below €18.24.

Taxis from the terminal work on a principle that catches visitors out: journeys starting at the airport are charged a fixed minimum, not a meter reading. That minimum is €18.24 on weekday daytimes, €22.48 on weekday nights and daytime public holidays, and €25.80 on weekend nights, with €0.58 per item of hold luggage and €2.23 between midnight and 6am. On the ticket question, a single paper ticket is the right choice for one or two journeys. The regional Consorcio travel card undercuts Renfe over short hops but loses its advantage on the longest one, so a week on the coast rarely repays buying one on arrival. And no booking is needed: the C1 is a turn-up-and-go service with machines beside the platform, and luggage travels free.
For a group of four the arithmetic is quickly done. Four train tickets to Torremolinos come to €7.20; a weekday-night taxi is €22.48 before luggage. The gap is about fifteen euros for a door-to-door ride at an hour when the platform is empty.
The town with no railway station
Marbella is the outlier of the four, and not because of distance. It has no railway station, and its own council names Fuengirola, 27 km away, and María Zambrano, 57 km, as the closest railheads. The other three sit on line C1, which runs from Málaga-Centro Alameda through the airport to Fuengirola from a station built into the Terminal 3 building, reached from the outdoor arrivals area or the departures forecourt. No shuttle, no walk across a car park.
Their station names do not match the place names, which is where most arrivals go wrong. Benalmádena’s stop is called Arroyo de la Miel. Torremolinos spreads five stops across its own boundary. What the clock does after nine in the evening
Trains leave the terminal for the coast every 20 minutes from 06:42 until 21:42. After that the service thins to 30 minutes, and only four departures remain: 22:12, 22:42, 23:12 and 23:42. Missing one of those costs half an hour on a platform, not twenty minutes, which matters when a bag takes a while to appear.
Read that final coast-bound service backwards from where it ends and the margin becomes obvious: Fuengirola at 00:16, Arroyo de la Miel at 00:01, Torremolinos at 23:53, off the terminal platform at 23:42. Weekends change the count rather than the clock. Renfe runs 52 coast-bound trains from Monday to Friday and 49 on Saturday and Sunday, with the same first departure at 05:32 and the same last one at 23:42; what shifts is the morning, which takes longer to reach its 20-minute rhythm.
Where the operator’s own pages disagree
Avanza publishes two prices for the same Marbella coach, one in each language version of its own website, and the English page is the one an arriving visitor usually lands on.
The company runs 11 lines through the airport towards the southwest: L-602, L-603, L-605, L-607, L-610, L-611, L-613, L-614, L-616, L-617 and L-622, the last of these via Fuengirola. Direct journey times are 45 minutes to Marbella, 55 to San Pedro, 1 hour 15 to Estepona and 1 hour 55 to both La Línea and Algeciras.
The fares are where the two versions part company. In Spanish, Marbella is advertised from €6.48 and Estepona from €10.24. In English, the same two journeys are €6.33 and €10.00. The airport ticket desk is given as open 07:45 to 23:00 on one page and 07:45 to 23:05 on the other. Both versions are live, and the figure that applies is the one on the desk when you reach it.
That desk time is the operative number for Marbella. Line L-616, the express, publishes only its departures from Málaga bus station, at 14:50, 17:15 and 19:30, so the evening departure from the airport is asked at the counter on arrival.
When the train has gone
After 23:42 the coast has no public transport at all. Aena lists no bus to Torremolinos or Benalmádena among the airport’s transport links, and the coaches that call at Terminal 3 head southwest towards Marbella, Estepona, La Línea and Algeciras.
The one exception runs the other way: the EMT express line into the city, at €4. So for the three train towns after 23:42 the options are a taxi or a change of plan.
The change of plan is worth considering rather than dismissing. The 00:54 train reaches Málaga-Centro Alameda in 12 minutes for €1.80, and by morning the coast is back to being 11, 19 or 34 minutes away. Which one to take, by landing time
The hour on the boarding pass decides more than the destination does, because 21:42 and 23:42 cut the day into three.
- Landing before 21:42, going to Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola. Train, every 20 minutes, from €1.80.
- Landing between 21:42 and 23:42. Still the train, but with half an hour between departures and no slack for a delayed bag.
- Landing after 23:42, going to the coast. Taxi, from €22.48 on a weekday night.
- Going to Marbella at any hour. Avanza coach while the desk is open, taxi once it is not.
- Landing in the small hours. The 00:54 into Málaga, and the coast in the morning.
