Things to do in Fuengirola, holiday base or Málaga day trip

Fuengirola works better as a holiday base than as a sightseeing stop: trains reach Malaga Airport in 34 minutes and run until 12.20am, four Blue Flag beaches line 7 kilometres of coast and Mijas Pueblo is 25 minutes uphill by bus. Its heritage sites, Sohail Castle included, all close on Mondays.

As a base, Fuengirola is hard to beat on transport: the C-1 commuter train reaches Málaga Airport in 34 minutes, runs every 20 minutes through the middle of the day and keeps going until 12.20am. As a sight, it is thinner: Sohail Castle, the main monument, stands 1.9 kilometres from the station and closes at 2pm from Tuesday to Friday.

Is Fuengirola worth visiting? As a holiday base, yes: Malaga Airport is 34 minutes away by train, Malaga city 46 and Mijas Pueblo 25 by bus, with 7 kilometres of Blue Flag beach in town. As a day trip it fills an afternoon: Sohail Castle is free but shuts at 2pm on weekdays, and every heritage site closes on Mondays.

Fuengirola is a resort town on the western Costa del Sol at the end of the C-1 line from Malaga, with four train stops, four beaches and more than 140 nationalities living side by side, by the count of its own tourist board, which also publishes in English, German, French and Finnish.

Holiday base or day trip, which one Fuengirola suits

Fuengirola suits a beach holiday without a car. The station is in the town centre, 522 metres from the main beach, and the bus station next door runs the M-122 to Mijas Pueblo, 25 minutes away, with the last bus down at 10pm every day. Bioparc Fuengirola, the town’s zoo, is 600 metres from the train and costs 29.50 euros for an adult. Which of the four beaches suits you, from the dog beach by Mijas to assisted bathing, is in Fuengirola’s beaches.

If you are weighing it against Torremolinos and Benalmádena, hotel prices and train times for all three are in Fuengirola, Torremolinos or Benalmadena as a base.

It suits a day trip less well. The heritage listed on the town’s tourism portal comes down to the castle and three Roman sites, one of which, Suel, next to the castle, is listed as closed long term. Anyone after whitewashed streets should head for Mijas Pueblo instead, and the best towns near Malaga sorts the alternatives by trip length.

First and last C-1 trains between Fuengirola, Malaga Airport and Malaga cityThe first train from Malaga Centro-Alameda to Fuengirola leaves at 5.20am and the last at 11.30pm. From the airport, trains to Fuengirola run from 5.32am to 11.42pm. From Fuengirola, the first train towards the airport and the city leaves at 6.10am and the last at 12.20am, reaching the airport at 12.53am and Malaga Centro-Alameda at 1.06am.6am9amnoon3pm6pm9pmmidnightMalaga Centro to Fuengirola5.20am11.30pmAirport to Fuengirola5.32am11.42pmFuengirola to Airport6.10am12.20amFuengirola to Malaga Centro6.10am12.20amEvery 20 minutes in the middle of the day; 52 trains on weekdays, 49 at weekendsTimes of the first and last departure, same timetable seven days a week
A flight landing after 11.42pm has no train to Fuengirola, while a dinner in Malaga still has a train back until 11.30pm.

For flights, the timetable sets the limits. The first train leaves Fuengirola at 6.10am and reaches the airport at 6.43am; the last from the airport leaves at 11.42pm and arrives at 12.16am, so a delayed late flight means a taxi. Going into Malaga for dinner is easier: trains to Fuengirola leave Malaga Centro-Alameda from 5.20am, the last at 11.30pm, and the last one from Fuengirola into the city at 12.20am reaches it at 1.06am. The route from the terminal to every resort on this coast is in Malaga Airport to the coast.

Which C-1 stop to get off at

Fuengirola has four stops and the right one depends on the plan. Renfe takes 37 minutes from Malaga Centro-Alameda to Carvajal, 39 to Torreblanca, 42 to Los Boliches and 46 to Fuengirola, the end of the line.

PlanStopWalk from the stop, straight line

The fare is charged by zones and you can pay at the gate with a contactless bank card. Renfe’s rule is to tap in and tap out: skip the exit gate and you are charged the maximum fare of the whole network. From the fifth trip in a calendar month on the same card, the fare drops by 40 percent, which adds up over a week’s stay. Zones and the full line are in Malaga’s Cercanías trains and the west coast train.

When Sohail Castle and the Roman sites are open

Sohail Castle opens free from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm, and at weekends and on public holidays from 10am to 6pm; it is closed on Mondays. That is the timetable Fuengirola’s tourist board set from 23 September to the end of the year. In July and August it opened only on scattered days, mostly from 10am to 2pm, so a summer visit needs a call to 663 99 67 27 first.

On a weekday, then, the castle is a morning visit, and the afternoon goes to the beach and to a late Spanish lunch, whose hours are explained in Malaga meal times. The castle sits on a 38-metre hill at the mouth of the Fuengirola river, inside a 65,490-square-metre park that shuts during weather alerts, and what you visit is the walled enclosure and the view over El Castillo beach.

What is open in Fuengirola on each day of the week, October to JuneOn Mondays none of the three heritage sites opens and there is no market. Tuesday to Friday, Sohail Castle and the Finca del Secretario visitor centre open from 10am to 2pm. The Torreblanca Roman baths open only Friday to Sunday, 10am to 2pm. At weekends the castle stays open until 6pm and the Finca adds 3.30pm to 6pm. A Monday in Fuengirola is a beach day: every heritage site is shut and there is no market.

The two Roman sites keep shorter hours. The Finca del Secretario visitor centre opens Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and at weekends also from 3.30pm to 6pm, while its park opens daily from 10am to 10pm between October and April. The Torreblanca baths open only Friday to Sunday, 10am to 2pm, and in July and August from 6pm to 10pm. For either, the price is checked with the tourist office on 952 46 74 57.

Which Fuengirola beach to choose

Fuengirola’s 7 kilometres of coast split into four beaches, all of them among the winners counted in Malaga’s Blue Flag beaches, and all four have assisted-bathing points.

BeachLengthBest for
Fuengirola1,650 metreschildren: calm water, trampolines and pedal boats, 522 metres from the station
Los Boliches-Gaviotas3,000 metresspace: the longest beach, with an area adapted for older bathers

El Castillo800 metresdogs: a fenced 3,000-square-metre dog area, open all year

Beach services run at weekends from Easter and daily from 1 June to the end of September. El Castillo has moderate waves; the other three are described as calm on the municipal portal. Rules for dogs on the rest of the coast are in dog-friendly beaches in Malaga.

All four train stops sit in the northern half of town: Sohail Castle, at the southern tip, is 1.9 kilometres from the nearest one.

Which day the Fuengirola markets run

The Tuesday market is the big one: more than 400 stalls at the fairground on Avenida Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo, from 9am to 2pm.

On Saturday the same site holds a flea market of more than 300 stalls with antiques and second-hand goods, and on Sunday a smaller market of 132 stalls sets up on Calle Méndez Núñez. During the Rosario fair, held every year from 6 to 12 October with horse shows and fair booths on the same ground, the fairground markets do not run.

Where to go from a Fuengirola base

Mijas Pueblo is the closest change of scene, 25 minutes on the M-122 from the bus station, and the wider list of escapes sorted by how long they take is in day trips from Malaga.

For the sea, dolphin-watching catamarans sail from Puerto Marina in Benalmádena, and the train to Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel takes 16 minutes. For a family day, Bioparc from Malaga covers prices and the single-entry rule.

For villages further inland, towns near Malaga without a car lists which ones still have a bus back on Sunday. The direct M-113 bus also links Fuengirola with Malaga bus station in about 45 minutes, but its last departure from Malaga is 10pm on weekdays, so evenings belong to the train.

FAQs about visiting Fuengirola

Is Fuengirola worth visiting?

As a base, yes: the C-1 train reaches Malaga Airport in 34 minutes and Malaga city in 46, and four Blue Flag beaches cover 7 kilometres. As a sight, it fills half a day: Sohail Castle is free but shuts at 2pm on weekdays, and every heritage site closes on Mondays.

How do I get from Malaga Airport to Fuengirola?

Take the C-1 train from the station inside the airport. Fuengirola is the end of the line, 34 minutes away, with trains every 20 minutes in the middle of the day. The first leaves the airport at 5.32am and the last at 11.42pm, arriving at 12.16am.

When is Sohail Castle open?

From late September to December, Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and at weekends and on public holidays from 10am to 6pm. It is closed on Mondays and entry is free. In July and August it opens only on scattered days, mostly mornings, so call 663 99 67 27 first.

What day is the Fuengirola market?

Tuesday, from 9am to 2pm at the fairground on Avenida Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo, with more than 400 stalls. A flea market fills the same site on Saturday mornings, and a smaller Sunday market of 132 stalls sets up on Calle Méndez Núñez. Neither fairground market runs during the Rosario fair in early October.

Do I need to book anything in Fuengirola?

Not for the beaches or Sohail Castle, which is free; group visits to the castle are arranged in advance on 663 99 67 27. Bioparc Fuengirola is the one to book: tickets bought online at least 24 hours ahead cost 1 euro less than the 29.50-euro adult price at the gate.

Stay in Fuengirola for the train and the beaches; visit it for a weekend afternoon, never on a Monday.
