Pick a town near Malaga by the last bus back, not by the photos. From Ronda, the last Avanza bus to Malaga leaves at 6.35pm; from Nerja, ALSA’s last one goes at 9.55pm; and from Mijas Pueblo, bus M-122 runs down to Fuengirola until 10pm every day. That gap of more than three hours decides whether you eat dinner in the town or back in Malaga.
What are the best towns to visit near Malaga? For half a day, Mijas Pueblo and Benalmádena Pueblo, linked by bus M-121 in 15 to 30 minutes. For a full day, Ronda, Antequera or Nerja with Frigiliana. The three villages certified by The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain are Frigiliana, Genalguacil and Parauta, and Genalguacil and Parauta are car trips.
The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain is a non-profit association that certifies villages for their old town and heritage, and in Malaga province it lists only Frigiliana, Genalguacil and Parauta. Frigiliana, at 311 metres in the Axarquía, has held the seal since 2015; Genalguacil sits at 497 metres in the Genal Valley and Parauta at 750 metres near Ronda. Mijas, Ronda and Júzcar are not members.

Half a day from Malaga without a car
Mijas Pueblo is the easy half day if you go through Fuengirola. Take the C1 suburban train to the end of the line, then bus M-122, which climbs to Mijas in 17 to 25 minutes with 21 departures Monday to Saturday and 22 on Sundays and holidays; the last bus down leaves at 10pm.
The direct M-112 from Malaga makes only 4 trips on weekdays, with the last one back from Mijas at 10.20pm, and one at weekends, at 3.25pm, whose only return leaves Mijas at 11.20am. The same C1 train stops at the airport on its way to Fuengirola, so Mijas works as a first afternoon after landing; single ticket or Consorcio travel card is compared in Malaga airport to the coast.
The donkey taxis are the Mijas image, and a town bylaw caps each load at 80 kilos. More in Mijas Pueblo.
Benalmádena Pueblo, the old village about 300 metres up, pairs with Mijas in one afternoon: bus M-121 links them in 15 to 30 minutes every day, and the last one from Mijas leaves at 8.50pm on weekdays and 9.35pm at weekends. Colomares castle charges €3.50 and is seen from outside only (Colomares castle); the three parts of the town are in what to see in Benalmádena.
Distance misleads. Comares is 22.5 km from Malaga, about the same as Mijas, yet bus M-360 leaves Malaga at 1.30pm on Mondays and Fridays only, ends at Olías at 2.26pm and comes back at 8am. Which towns do have a same-day ride back, from Álora’s last train at 10.45pm to Almogía with none, is in towns near Malaga without a car. Rincón de la Victoria, 13.8 km away, is the shortest half day, covered in Rincón de la Victoria.
Full-day towns, and when the last bus leaves
Ronda needs the whole day because Avanza has only two buses out, at 8am and 9.15am, and three back, at 3pm, 4.15pm and 6.35pm. Autocares Sierra de las Nieves runs at 8am Monday to Saturday, reaches Ronda at 10.45am and costs €12.01. There are no trains while the line is closed for works, and the Arab Baths cost €4.50. Timetables and a walking order are in Ronda from Malaga.
Antequera has the best bus of the full-day towns. The M-253 takes 71 minutes, leaves daily at 9am and returns daily at 7.30pm. The Alcazaba and Colegiata ticket is €8, free on Tuesdays from 2pm to 6pm, and the Dolmens close on Mondays, as Antequera from Malaga and day trips from Malaga explain.
Nerja with Frigiliana fills the east. ALSA takes 1 hour 25 minutes to Nerja with 23 departures on weekdays (things to do in Nerja), and the bus up to Frigiliana is in Frigiliana and Nerja in one day.
The three Most Beautiful Villages, and what each one needs
Frigiliana is the one you can do by bus. Grupo Fajardo runs 12 buses each way from Nerja Monday to Saturday and 7 on Sundays, and the old town is a listed historic ensemble. Drivers park at Plaza de las Tres Culturas and walk in, because the village has its own traffic bylaw.
Genalguacil, at 497 metres, calls itself a village-museum, with art spread through its streets and the Fernando Centeno López contemporary art museum on 3 floors; the association gives it about 400 residents. The autumn chestnut colour around it is a crop, not wild forest, as the Genal Valley in autumn explains.
Parauta, the highest at 750 metres and about 330 residents, holds the Escaleretas Spanish fir, a single tree protected on 0.19 hectares whose age the Junta de Andalucía puts at 350 to 550 years (the Escaleretas fir). None of the three is on the official white villages route, whose 19 villages are all in Cádiz, as the white villages route sets out.
What changes on a Sunday
Sunday is the day a good plan breaks, and each town breaks differently:
- Frigiliana keeps its last bus down at 9.10pm, but nothing goes up from Nerja between 1pm and 4.15pm, and nothing comes down between 1.30pm and 5pm.
- Mijas loses its direct bus from Malaga, so go through Fuengirola, where the M-122 still runs 22 times.
- Ronda is reachable on the Avanza bus, but the Arab Baths close at 3pm on Sundays and holidays, and Sierra de las Nieves does not run.
- Setenil de las Bodegas is in Cádiz, not Malaga, and gets no scheduled bus on Sundays (Setenil from Malaga).
- Antequera keeps its 9am bus out, with Sunday returns at 2.30pm, 5pm and 7.30pm.
Towns for children, and what they cost
Benalmádena packs the most for children into one town: the cable car is free under 3 years or under one metre, the Monowa butterfly park charges €11.50 for ages 3 to 12 and Colomares castle €2.50.
| Sight | Town | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|---|
| Benalmádena cable car | Benalmádena | €17.90 online, €21.90 at the desk | €12.90 online reduced; free under 3 or under 1 metre |
| Monowa butterfly park | Benalmádena | €13.50 | €11.50 aged 3 to 12; free under 3 |
| Colomares castle | Benalmádena | €3.50 | €2.50 |
| Cueva del Tesoro | Rincón de la Victoria | €6 | €4 aged 4 to 14 |
| Alcazaba and Colegiata | Antequera | €8 | €4 aged 7 to 16; free up to 6 |
Age matters more than price in Rincón de la Victoria: the Cueva de la Victoria lets in 20 people a day and no one under 10, while the Cueva del Tesoro is free on weekdays in its first hour if you book (the Treasure Cave). The Nerja Cave costs €16 online and €18 at the desk (Nerja Caves); cable car and butterfly details are in the Benalmádena cable car and Monowa.
In July and August, the coast or an early start
Nerja is the pretty town with a beach: 4 Blue Flags, at Burriana, Maro, Playazo-Chucho and Torrecilla, and lifeguards from 1 June to 27 September until 9pm. From 1 July to 31 August Frigiliana adds a later bus down to Nerja at 10pm. Casares puts 6 festival dates in August, starting with its 4-day fair on the first weekend (Casares).
In Mijas, the donkey taxis stop from 2pm to 6pm whenever AEMET issues a yellow heat warning, so a summer visit with children works best in the morning.
Who should skip which town
- Júzcar, if you come for the Smurfs. Sony Pictures painted it blue with more than 4,000 litres of paint for the film launch, residents voted 149 to 36 to stay blue, and the figures were removed (Júzcar).
- Comares, without a car. Bus M-360 runs on Mondays and Fridays only and stops at Olías. By car, the walk through the village is in Comares, the Málaga village you can only reach by car.
- Ronda, by train. The line is closed for works and Renfe replaces those trains with road coaches.
- Torremolinos old town, for interiors. The Pimentel tower, 12 metres tall, is closed inside (Torremolinos old town).
- Genalguacil and Parauta, if you do not want to drive. Both are mountain-road trips; the car maths is in car hire in Malaga.

Nerja, Mijas or Antequera. ALSA runs 23 buses to Nerja on Sundays, bus M-122 makes 22 trips from Fuengirola to Mijas, and the M-253 leaves for Antequera at 9am every day. Avoid Setenil, with no Sunday bus, and Frigiliana between 1pm and 5pm.
