From Malaga, Autocares Sierra de las Nieves reaches Ronda at 10.45am on its inland route, leaving at 8am for 12.01 euros, and line 66 covers the 18.8 kilometres to Setenil in 45 minutes for 2.32 euros. Can you visit Setenil from Malaga without a car? Yes, on weekdays only, through Ronda: the 8am bus from Malaga reaches Ronda at 10.45am, line 66 leaves for Setenil at 11.30am and arrives at 12.15pm, and the 1.55pm bus back connects in Ronda. Setenil de las Bodegas is a village in the Sierra de Cádiz whose houses are built into the Trejo river gorge, with the rock as their roof. It sits 640 metres up in Cádiz province, not Málaga, and from Málaga Airport the C1 train reaches María Zambrano, beside the bus station, in about 8 minutes for 1.80 euros.

What you will see in 1 hour 40 minutes

The Diputación de Cádiz, the provincial council, maps a route of cave streets that always run parallel to the river. Cuevas del Sol, the busiest, has bars and restaurants under the rock; Cuevas de la Sombra is its “sister” street. Cabrerizas was a set for the Curro Jiménez bandit series, and on Jabonería and Herrerías the houses under the rock have always stayed homes.

The old town is walkable: Cuevas del Sol to the church is about 200 metres in a straight line.

Above the river sits La Villa, the old Almohad settlement, with the 12th-century keep, the late Gothic Iglesia de la Encarnación and the Casa de la Damita, which holds a 5,000-year-old Venus figure. The council dates the final siege to 21 September 1484, the seventh, and the village broke free of Ronda in 1630. Monument hours and prices are not published; ask the tourist office on +34 956 13 42 61. The visit window ends at 1.55pm, before Spanish lunch hours, so lunch is easier back in Ronda, as explained in Malaga meal times.
