Fuengirola is the Costa del Sol beach you can reach without ever needing a car. Its 7 kilometres of coast are 4 official beaches, El Castillo, Fuengirola, Los Boliches-Las Gaviotas and Carvajal, all holding a Blue Flag in 2026, for the seventh year running. And the C-1 train runs parallel to them, with four stations inside the town.
Which Fuengirola beach is closest to the train? Las Gaviotas, about 5 minutes on foot from Torreblanca del Sol station, and Los Boliches, 6 minutes from its own. Carvajal and Torreblanca are 7 minutes from their stations. From Fuengirola station, the end of the line, Santa Amalia is 9 minutes away and El Castillo 15.
How to get from Malaga airport to a Fuengirola beach
From the airport station, the C-1 reaches Fuengirola in 34 minutes; from Malaga Centro-Alameda it takes 46. In practice:
- Follow the Cercanías signs from arrivals to the airport station and buy a single ticket at the machine; contactless cards work there too.
- Take any train towards Fuengirola: every one on the line ends there.
- Get off at Torreblanca del Sol or Los Boliches for the hotel strip, or at Carvajal for the quieter end.
- Walk 5 to 7 minutes down to the promenade. The whole trip takes about 40 minutes, and there is no need to book anything.
On weekdays 52 trains run towards Malaga, 3 an hour from 8am to 10pm, the first at 6.10am and the last at 11.50pm, plus one at 12.20am. Most hotels are along Los Boliches and Las Gaviotas, so stay on the train past Fuengirola’s own central stop only if your hotel is south of it. Fares and the other coastal towns are compared in Malaga airport to the coast, and buses and passes in getting around Malaga.
Getting off at the end of the line is the usual mistake: it is the furthest station from the busiest stretch. The full timetable is in the Malaga Cercanías trains.
Which of the four beaches to choose
Santa Amalia, San Francisco, Las Gaviotas and Torreblanca are not separate beaches: the town groups them into its four official ones.
El Castillo is 800 metres of fine dark sand below Sohail Castle, with 2 beach bars, a play area and a barbecue zone for moragas that has to be booked. Fuengirola beach, 1,650 metres including Santa Amalia, is the only one with golden sand and the busiest, with 9 bars. Los Boliches-Las Gaviotas is the long one, 3,000 metres by 60 wide on average, with 14 bars and the hotels behind it. Carvajal, 1,200 metres on the Benalmádena boundary, is described by the town hall as having a younger crowd.
Across the whole coast there are 69 sunbed plots, 29 beach bars and 14 public toilets; how sunbed concessions work is in Malaga sunbed concessions.
Can you bring a dog, and when are there lifeguards
Dogs go only to the fenced beach, 3,424 m² in the El Castillo area by the Mijas boundary, open since 2014 with 2 dog showers. From Easter it is the only stretch allowed, and it is about 39 minutes on foot from the station; the rest of the coast is in dog-friendly beaches in Malaga.
Wheelchair users have an adapted plot on each of the four beaches, with shade, decking and assisted bathing by the lifeguards, booked on 691 102 985. There is also an audio guide for blind bathers. The wider network is in accessible bathing in Malaga.
Lifeguards work daily from 1 June to 30 September, until 8pm, with 10 towers and drones over the water. At Easter the hours are 11am to 7pm, and in April and May only weekends and holidays. Swim in October and you are on your own.
What might put you off
It is an urban coast end to end, with no coves, no naturist beach and dark sand that gets hot by noon. Beaches are free to use, and the sunbeds are not.
Keep your phone and wallet with you rather than on the towel when you swim, as on any busy beach. If you want coves, cross into Benalmádena’s beaches; what to do in town is in things to do in Fuengirola.
