If you are used to British school holidays, you expect July and August to be the expensive weeks and everything else to be cheap. Málaga does not follow that calendar. In 2025 the most expensive month in the city was May, at 152.39 euros a night, ahead of August’s 150.46, and September finished 20 cents behind August at 150.26. July that year was cheaper still, at 133.91.
When are hotels most expensive in Málaga? Not reliably in August. It topped the year in 2023 and 2024 at 145.84 and 166.42 euros, but in 2025 May led with 152.39 against 150.46. January is the cheapest month four years running, from 98.71 euros in 2023 to 119.63 in 2026.
The figures are the average daily rate collected from hotels by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, published monthly for each tourist destination. The series runs from August 2022 to July 2026 and covers 8 places in Málaga province, so the city can be set against Marbella, Nerja, Ronda or Torremolinos in the same month.
Why the peak moves and yours may not match
A Spanish city break and a Costa del Sol beach fortnight are two different markets, and Málaga city sits in the first one. That is why its calendar tracks conferences, Easter and long weekends more than it tracks school terms, and why May and September hold up while July can sag.
The numbers make the point better than the explanation. Across four summers the city’s July rate went 133.05, 147.24, 133.91 and 162.26 euros, moving up and down, while January went 98.71, 106.74, 110.18 and 119.63, rising every single year without exception.

Easter is the one step you can count on. In 2026 the rate went from 133.02 euros in March to 153.55 in April, a jump of 20.53 in four weeks, and in 2025 from 127.00 to 147.71, almost the same. What fills the city that week is in Holy Week in Málaga.
City or coast, and how the order flips
The choice between staying in the city and staying on the beach is not a matter of taste in Málaga, it is a matter of month, because the two swap places twice a year.
In February 2026 Benalmádena averaged 81.02 euros and the city 123.33: the coast 42.31 euros cheaper. In August 2025 the same pair read 185.70 and 150.46, the coast 35.24 dearer. Torremolinos behaves identically, at 86.90 euros in February and 190.52 in July 2026.

Two of the eight never move. Marbella is dearer than the city in all 19 months measured since January 2025, reaching 416.22 euros in July 2026 against 162.26 — the gap alone is worth reading before booking a base, and what the town is like is in Marbella from Málaga. At the other end, Fuengirola and Ronda never once come out dearer.
Estepona swings hardest of all, between 73.04 euros in February 2023 and 379.57 in August 2025, a factor of 5.2. Beach towns out of season are a different product at a different price, which is the argument behind Torremolinos beaches and the Málaga beach season, and the size and occupancy behind those rooms is in Costa del Sol hotel size and occupancy.
Which of the two figures tells you if beds are left
Two figures come out each month and they are not the same thing. The average daily rate is what an occupied room sold for. RevPAR spreads the takings across every room in the hotel, occupied or empty. The wider the gap between them, the emptier the building.
For a traveller that gap is a pressure gauge. Close together means full, with no room to haggle and no late availability; far apart means beds going spare.
- January 2026. Rate 119.63 euros, RevPAR 74.68, a gap of 44.95 — the widest of the year and the emptiest month.
- December 2025. Rate 136.24, RevPAR 93.92, a gap of 42.32. December looks like a mid-season price with an off-season hotel behind it.
- March 2026. Rate 133.02, RevPAR 111.37, gap 21.65. Almost the same price as December, half the empty space.
- August 2025. Rate 150.46, RevPAR 135.85, gap 14.61 — the tightest in the recent series.

What to do with this before you book
Four decisions come straight out of the series, and the first one is worth about 40 euros a night.
Move the dates if you can. January and February in the city run roughly 40 euros below May or July, and the weather trade-off is a mild winter rather than a wet one. Budget for the Easter step of around 20 euros over March if the trip lands in April. Book August early, because a 14.61-euro gap between the two figures means nothing is left late. And pick the side by the month: from November to March the coast undercuts the city, from June to September it is the other way round.
One caution on any figure you read, including these. The official series and the booking engines disagree, because they count differently: the survey asks hotels what they charged, while KAYAK reports what its own searches return, at 114 euros for January and 194 for August, and adds that Sunday nights average 133 against 218 on Saturdays. In August the two methods sit 43.54 euros apart.
One more thing the averages hide: where you sleep changes what the trip costs after the room. A base in the centre puts dinner and the museums on foot, while a coastal base adds a train twice a day: the C-1 line from the airport into the city costs 1.80 euros a ride and takes 11 minutes, and the same line runs the whole way to Fuengirola in 45 minutes, serving Torremolinos and Benalmádena on the way.
