How long is the train from Madrid to Málaga, and which operator? Between about 2 h 45 min and 2 h 56 min depending on the company. Ouigo is the cheapest, from 9 euros, and also the slowest, at 2 h 56 min published by the company itself. Iryo runs about 2 h 47 min, and Renfe’s AVE is the quickest with the most departures.
For a visitor coming from Madrid the gap between fastest and slowest is close to half an hour, but the bigger question is whether to take the train at all. It runs city centre to city centre, and María Zambrano sits inside Málaga, next to the bus station, rather than out by an airport.
Train or plane, and why the transfers decide it
This is the choice most people from outside Spain are making, and the flight time is the wrong number to compare.
The train covers the route in under 3 hours on every operator, and it ends in the city. A flight has to add getting to Madrid’s airport, security, and then the journey in from Málaga airport, where the Cercanías C1 alone takes 12 minutes to the centre before you have walked anywhere. How many trains there are, and when
Departure frequency separates the incumbent from the two newcomers more sharply than price does, and it decides more journeys.
Renfe runs the most services on the corridor. Iryo declares up to 7 departures a day, the first at 7.55am. Ouigo publishes a first train at 7.19am and a last at 3.23pm, which means no afternoon or evening departure from Madrid. That single line breaks more plans than any fare comparison, and it appears in none of them.
The traffic split reflects the shape of the corridor. According to trade press, Renfe carries 70 per cent of passengers on the Madrid to Málaga and Granada axis, Iryo 21 per cent and Ouigo 9 per cent.
What the 9 euro fare includes
The headline fare comes with a rulebook, and it is worth reading before comparing it with the other two.
The basic service covers one bag of 36 by 27 by 15 centimetres and one cabin case of 55 by 35 by 25. A large case does not fit. Children aged 3 to 14 travel on a flat 7 euro fare and under-3s go free on an adult’s lap. A pet costs 10 euros extra, capped at 10 kilos and 2 animals per trip.
Upgrades are sold piece by piece: the OUIGO PLUS pack adds one more case and seat choice, an XL seat starts at 3 euros, and onboard entertainment, OUIFUN, is 3 euros per traveller.

How long each operator takes, and from how much
All three cover the same line inside half an hour of each other, and the price order is the exact reverse of the speed order.

The cheapest is also the slowest: Ouigo’s 9 euros costs 11 minutes more than the AVE, and that is the whole decision unless a connection at the other end is tight.
Arriving, and what happens on the platform
María Zambrano is not an out-of-town interchange, and that changes the first hour in the city.

How far to trust Renfe’s and Iryo’s times
The times, fares and conditions for Iryo and Renfe circulate through resellers such as BlaBlaCar, Ofertren and Billetesave, which are not the companies running the trains and have a commercial interest in the comparison.
That is fine for a rough idea and not fine for planning to the minute. Your own ticket gives the exact journey time when you buy it, and it is worth reading before fixing anything at the other end, because on this line the gap between fastest and slowest is close to half an hour.
On this route the fare is easy to compare. The clock is not.
The other high-speed corridor into María Zambrano skips the capital entirely. One AVE each way runs from Barcelona through Zaragoza, restored on 4 May 2026, and it takes more than twice as long as this one.
