Four days is the first length that absorbs two full excursions. It is worth knowing what that means before booking.
Because the first two days belong to the city, the two excursions land on consecutive days. There is no recovery day between them. Five days provides one, and that is the entire difference between those two lengths. On a Thursday-to-Sunday shape they land on the Friday and the Saturday.
If one of them is the Caminito del Rey, that is 7.7 kilometres of one-way walkway from Ardales to Álora. Pairing it with El Torcal de Antequera the next morning, which is another walking day, is a combination nobody warns you about while you are planning from an armchair.
The working rule: of the two trips, only one should involve walking. Make the other a village or an archaeological site.
The Sunday asymmetry
Two facts sit on the same day and pull in opposite directions.
Inside Málaga, the council’s price list makes the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle free from 14:00 every Sunday, and the museums’ free windows open at 16:00. Outside it, the Dólmenes de Antequera close at 15:00 all year, and the bus between Frigiliana and Nerja drops to a timetable with a three and a half hour gap.
On a three-day trip this is trivia, because the calendar arrives fixed. On a four-day trip it is an instruction: the excursion goes on another day, and Sunday stays in town.
The Thursday to Sunday shape
Work from the flight times backwards and the layout writes itself.
The layout that loses least runs like this:
- Thursday — the old town
- Friday — a single direction: museums, coast or whatever is still owed
- Saturday — the excursion
- Sunday — back in Málaga, while the two hilltop monuments are not charging

The combinations that do not exist
Some pairings are ruled out by the calendar rather than by taste.
Monday closes both the Antequera dolmens and the Roman Theatre back in the city, because both answer to the Junta de Andalucía. So a Monday inside your four days removes the dolmens from the shortlist entirely, and the second excursion has to come from elsewhere.
In summer there is a cut that ignores the weekday: the dolmens shut from 14:00 to 19:00, exactly when anyone leaving Málaga after breakfast arrives.

The old town fills day one, with the Cathedral’s free half-hour at 8:30 and the Alcazaba at 45 to 75 minutes. A single direction fills day two. Day three is the first that can leave the city.
