What can you do in Málaga on a Monday
With eight houses open and seven shut, a Monday holds up if it is planned in the opposite order to the usual one.
- Start at the Picasso Museum, open 10am to 7pm, which is precisely what most itineraries write off that day.
- Add the Picasso Birthplace, open 9.30am to 8pm, ten minutes away across Plaza de la Merced.
- Finish at the Pompidou, open on Mondays and saving its closure for Tuesday, with a real cut-off at 7.30pm.
What is off the table is the Calle Alcazabilla axis: the Roman Theatre has its gate down, even though it never charges on the days it opens. The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle do not close on Mondays, so the upper old town stays available, with prices in the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro combined ticket.
Why the Monday rule does not work in Málaga
Mondays are written off in most European cities and here they are only half dead, because Málaga spreads its museums across managers who do not share a calendar.
The pattern does hold for the regionally run ones: the Roman Theatre and the Museo de Málaga both close, and both answer to the Junta de Andalucía. Everything else breaks it. The Carmen Thyssen and the MuCAC also close and are not regional. And the Picasso Museum, the Automobile Museum and the Birthplace open.

The free Monday, which comes with a caveat
A Monday in Málaga has one museum that costs nothing, and it is the only day of the week when that is true of it.
The Folk Arts and Customs Museum offers free visits on Mondays from 10am to 2pm, according to the Fundación Unicaja, which runs it. The catch is that the regional Cultural Agenda places the same free slot on Tuesdays from 1pm to 5pm, so the day itself is in dispute and worth confirming by phone.
