August is the fullest month and one of the least international

Only December falls lower than August, at 57.4 per cent. What moves is the domestic traveller: Spanish residents nearly double between October and August, while foreign arrivals barely shift, and shift downwards.
August also carries its own event, the Feria de Málaga, which draws a largely domestic crowd for nine days.

Ranked by foreign arrivals rather than by calendar, the year reorders itself. The figures come from the hotel occupancy survey of Spain’s Instituto Nacional de Estadística, covering hotel establishments across the province rather than the city alone.

August sits fifth on that ranking. Four months fall below 400,000 total guests and form the real trough: November, December, January and February. None of them lines up with the low season the council defines for its beaches, set out in Malaga beach season.
July is the quiet month for foreign arrivals
Within the foreign series, July 2025 is the weakest of the five warm months at 405,053 guests, below June, August, September and October.
Two different things are worth separating here. July holds the lowest absolute number of foreign guests in the warm half of the year, while the lowest share belongs to August, at 59.7 per cent against July’s 60.4 per cent.

How long each kind of visitor stays
Dividing overnight stays by guests gives an average length of stay, and the two markets behave very differently.
The foreign visitor holds between 3.6 and 4.5 nights all year. The Spanish resident swings from 3.21 nights in August down to 1.98 in November: weekends for most of the year, and a proper holiday only in summer.

Which part of this pattern holds each year
The series runs from July 2025 to June 2026, the twelve complete months available in the INE table when this was written.
It covers hotel establishments only: no holiday lets, no apartments, no staying with family. The INE itself warns that, because of updates to its establishment directories, figures from different years are not directly comparable.
