Three kinds of visitor eat in Teatinos and none of them is choosing a restaurant for the evening: a student between classes, somebody working at the technology park, and the relative of a patient at the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria, the hospital everyone here calls el Clínico, at Campus Universitario Teatinos s/n. All three want the same thing, which is food nearby, cheap, in a window that fits a timetable. The Universidad de Málaga answers half of that: it names Comedores Escolares Claros as its catering contractor and publishes 7:30 to 19:30 at one faculty and 8:00 to 20:00 at another, but not one price on any page read.
How much does it cost to eat in Teatinos, Málaga? Nobody on the campus publishes a figure. The only printed price in the district is the set lunch at Casuego, calle Esquilo 30, at 14.50 euros, open every day 8:30 to 16:30. The university canteens publish hours and a contractor and leave the price to the counter.
That silence has a shape worth knowing before you plan a week here. Off campus, Casuego prints its set lunch and its hours; La Proa de Teatinos, calle Andrómeda 11, prints its hours to the minute and hides its menu inside a downloadable PDF; and a fourth address serves a page the browser will not open. What a menú del día is, and why nobody can define it for you
A menú del día is a fixed-price midday meal: courses, drink and something to finish, at one price, served only at lunch. It is the concept that decides a student budget in Teatinos, and the one no local will explain, because to them it needs no explaining.
It used to have a legal definition, and knowing it tells you what to check for. An Orden de 10 de julio de 1981, published in the BOE and amending a 1965 order, required restaurants to offer a «menú de la casa» in which, «bajo un precio global, estén incluidos el pan, vino y postre» — bread, wine and dessert under a single global price. That same order removed an earlier rule capping the menu at 80 per cent of à la carte prices.
The BOE now marks that order as «vigencia agotada», stating that the provision is no longer in force, and it does not name the norm that replaced it. So the set lunch survives as a custom rather than an obligation, which is exactly why what it includes changes from one house to the next and why the only reliable move is to ask what the price covers. The second half of the answer is the clock. The menú is tied to the midday sitting, and in Teatinos that sitting closes early: 16:00 at La Proa from Thursday to Saturday, 16:30 at Casuego every day. Eating on the Teatinos campus
The campus canteens are run by one contractor, Comedores Escolares Claros, and each faculty publishes its own page. Three were read, and the pattern is identical: hours yes, price no.

The Health Sciences page is the most useful of the three and the one no listing repeats. It opens earliest of anything in the district, at 7:30, adds occasional Saturday opening when the faculty runs a máster or a conference, takes orders for burgers and camperos before 12:30, and lists vegan and gluten-free cooking. Its menu is not on the website at all: it goes out daily through a broadcast list you join by writing to 622 11 55 87.
The Telecommunications school is the opposite. It describes the room — more than 700 square metres — and offers a downloadable floor plan, then replaces every practical detail with the phrase «menús de desayuno y almuerzo a precios asequibles», affordable breakfast and lunch menus, without a single number.
Why a 2017 price you may find online is not printed here
Search for university canteen prices in Málaga and you will find figures: a standard student menu, a cheaper one at the commerce faculty, dearer ones elsewhere. They come from an article in the student outlet aulamagna.com.es dated 26 January 2017, not from the university.
Nine years is long enough for a catering contract to be retendered more than once, and none of the three uma.es pages read carries a price to check them against. Quoting them as current would put a number in your hand that nobody stands behind, so the honest answer stays the one above: the university publishes hours, a contractor and a phone, and the price is at the counter.
If you are visiting somebody at the Hospital Clínico
The hospital shares the district and the postcode with the campus, at Campus Universitario Teatinos s/n, 29010 Málaga, which is why a relative on a long stay ends up eating in the same few places as the students.
Its own contact page publishes the things a visitor needs least and none of the ones they need most. There is a citizen information desk at the main entrance, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 21:00, and a second at Emergency Admissions covering 21:00 to 08:00 on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends and on public holidays. What that page does not publish is a cafeteria, its hours, or the visiting hours for the wards. Both change by unit and neither could be verified, so neither is stated here: the number above is the way to ask. In practice the district’s early opener matters most to a companion, and that is the 7:30 at the Health Sciences faculty, on the same campus.
What the places off campus publish
Away from the faculties the picture inverts: fewer venues, more detail, and one actual price.

Casuego is the only address in Teatinos that lets you budget before you sit down, and it also serves breakfast from 8:00, on 951 031 636. La Proa is the only one serving dinner, 20:30 to 23:30 and only Thursday to Saturday, on 952 27 46 60, and it closes Monday and Tuesday. The third domain fails certificate validation, so the browser never serves the page: that says the site has stopped working as a source, not that the business has closed, and the answer is to phone.
Getting to Teatinos from the centre, and what it costs
Teatinos is outside the old town and there is no walking it. Metro line 1 links the Teatinos university campus with Atarazanas in the historic centre, which is the connection the network was built for, and what else it reaches is in what the Málaga metro covers.
The fare comes from the Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano del Área de Málaga, which publishes 0.83 euros for a metro journey with a Consorcio transport card under the ordinary fares in force from 15 July to 31 December 2026. A city bus with the same card is 0.62 euros, and a bus-to-metro transfer is discounted only with a Consorcio card. Metromálaga’s own site returns a 403 error, so no timetable, station list or cash single fare is published here. Gluten-free here, and what the words are worth
Two places in Teatinos say they cook gluten-free, and the two statements are not the same kind of statement.
The Health Sciences cafeteria lists vegan and gluten-free options as part of its daily service, alongside the order-before-12:30 rule. Casuego advertises a gluten-free menu but contradicts itself: one part of its site says «con un 95 % de la carta sin gluten», another says «toda la carta es sin gluten». The gap between 95 per cent and all of it is precisely the margin in which a coeliac has to ask.
