You are in Málaga with no car and one free day, and the Caminito del Rey feels too tame. The El Chorro via ferrata is the answer an hour up the line: a 650-metre route with 250 metres of ascent, iron rungs, a 15-metre Tibetan bridge, a 30-metre monkey bridge and a 35-metre zip line, guided for 45 to 55 euros with all the gear.
How much does the El Chorro via ferrata cost? Guided, with harness, helmet and insurance, 45 to 55 euros a person: Horizon from 45, Guadalterra Aventura 48, Sendero Sur Aventura and OcioAventura Cerro Gordo 50, and La Garganta from 55. A solo traveller on a date of their own pays 140 euros with Sendero Sur. Minimum ages run from 12 to 16.
A via ferrata is a climbing route fitted with steel cables, rungs and bridges, so you clip in and climb without rope skills. The El Chorro route is graded K3 on a scale that runs from K1 to K6, sits above the Gaitanes Gorge in Álora, and starts about 640 metres from El Chorro-Caminito del Rey station.
Is the El Chorro via ferrata right for you
Yes, if you are reasonably fit and fine with exposure. No climbing background is needed: La Garganta takes complete beginners, and Sendero Sur Aventura only asks that you are not sedentary, because some steps need a pull from the arms and a push from the legs.
K3 means medium. OcioAventura Cerro Gordo explains that the grade comes from the length; judged on the moves alone it would be K2. If you have done ferratas in the Alps or the Dolomites, expect a short, scenic half day rather than a test.
No, if you suffer from vertigo: the two hanging bridges and the vertical rungs are the whole point. It is not accessible for wheelchair users either.
Age decides who can come. La Garganta does not take children under 11 and requires an adult for ages 12 to 17; Sendero Sur Aventura sets the bar at 14 and Horizon at 16. With a 12 or 13-year-old, La Garganta is the only fit. Other plans sorted by age are in Malaga with teenagers.
How to get to El Chorro by train from Málaga
No car needed. Renfe runs regional (Media Distancia) trains on the Málaga-Seville line and two Intercity trains each way that terminate at El Chorro-Caminito del Rey, every day of the week, on the timetable valid until 12 December. They leave from Málaga María Zambrano, the main station next to the Vialia shopping centre; the coastal C1 line from the airport also stops there.
| Leave Málaga | Reach El Chorro | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 9:05 | 10:02 | Starts from 10:30, such as Cerro Gordo’s winter slot |
| 9:43 | 10:37 | Starts from 11:00 |
| 13:26 | 14:21 | Cerro Gordo’s spring afternoon slot at 16:00 |
| 15:43 | 16:34 | Too late for Cerro Gordo’s 16:00 start |
| 17:08 | 18:00 | Overnight stay in El Chorro |
Trains back from El Chorro leave at 9:34, 10:43, 11:01, 13:06, 16:39 and 21:07, reaching María Zambrano at 10:26, 11:30, 11:47, 14:10, 17:32 and 21:54.
The first train arrives at 10:02. That rules out Sendero Sur’s 9:00 meeting at the station unless you sleep in El Chorro. OcioAventura Cerro Gordo’s winter slot, 11:00 to 15:00, works: you finish, eat, and catch the 16:39, back in Málaga at 17:32. Nothing leaves for Málaga between 13:06 and 16:39, so plan lunch into that gap.
One catch with Horizon: it meets at the station but lists your own vehicle among the things to bring, so check before booking whether the group drives to the start. The airport-to-city leg and the C1 and C2 lines are covered in Malaga commuter trains, and more car-free day trips in towns near Malaga without a car.
Which outfitter to book, and who guides in English
The language matters more than the price gap. La Garganta and Horizon Naturaleza y Aventura both list Spanish and English, and OcioAventura Cerro Gordo publishes its schedules and prices in English. Sendero Sur Aventura and Guadalterra Aventura do not state a language, so ask when booking.
| Outfitter | Price per person | Minimum age | Language | Meeting point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Garganta | from 55 euros | 12, with an adult | Spanish, English | Hotel reception, 100 metres from the platform |
| Horizon Naturaleza y Aventura | from 45 euros | 16 years | Spanish, English | El Chorro station |
| Sendero Sur Aventura | 50 euros on set dates | 14 years | ask | El Chorro station at 9:00 |
| Guadalterra Aventura | 48 euros flat | ask | ask | Diseminado Polígono 24, El Chorro |
| OcioAventura Cerro Gordo | 50 euros for 1 to 4, 45 for 5 to 8, 40 from 9 | ask | English booking | given on booking |
Off the set dates, the price rises with Sendero Sur: 140 euros for one person, 75 euros each for two and 55 euros each for three. Guadalterra’s flat 48 euros includes the pulley for the zip line, gloves, photos and video, and a picnic at the end.
How long does the El Chorro via ferrata take
Block out half a day. La Garganta quotes 3 to 4 hours, Horizon 3 hours, Sendero Sur about 4 hours depending on the group and how busy the route is, and Guadalterra 4 to 5 hours including the approach and the walk back.
The cabled section itself is shorter: OcioAventura Cerro Gordo puts it at 1 hour, plus 45 minutes back down on foot. The rest goes on kitting up, the safety briefing and waiting at the bridges, which take one person per section.
When to go, and when heat, wind or rain rule it out
Summer means early starts. OcioAventura Cerro Gordo moves to 9:00 to 13:00 in summer, and Sendero Sur brings the start forward to avoid the midday heat. The train from Málaga cannot reach a 9:00 start, so in summer a car or a night in El Chorro makes the plan easier.
Weather cancels it. La Garganta calls off or changes the activity in heavy rain, thick fog or strong wind, and refunds if it cancels. Spring gives the most choice: OcioAventura Cerro Gordo runs 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, and the afternoon slot pairs with the 13:26 out and the 21:07 back.
Cancellation terms differ more than prices. La Garganta refunds up to 24 hours before. Payment for Sendero Sur is 100 % upfront, with no refund within 48 hours. Guadalterra refunds in full only more than 30 days out, half between 15 and 30 days, and nothing after that. OcioAventura Cerro Gordo takes a 50 % deposit.
Can you combine it with the Caminito del Rey
It works only with an afternoon ferrata. The Caminito takes 3 to 4 hours including the access paths, and so does the ferrata, so the day ends on the last train, the 21:07, arriving at 21:54. Walk the Caminito in the morning and join Cerro Gordo’s spring session from 16:00 to 20:00.
The tickets, the shuttle and the one-way rule are in Caminito del Rey from Malaga. With children aged 8 to 11 the Caminito is possible and the ferrata is not. Free waymarked trails in the gorge are in Gaitanes Gorge trails, the lakes behind the dam in El Chorro reservoirs, and the painted cave up the valley in Ardales cave.
Can you do it without a guide
Possible only with your own kit: harness, helmet, a certified energy absorber, lanyards and a pulley, which is what Guadalterra Aventura hands out. Without a pulley you cannot ride the 35-metre zip line.
The route lies inside the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes natural site, a special protection area for birds of prey: griffon vulture, peregrine falcon, golden eagle and Bonelli’s eagle. The Junta de Andalucía rule on climbing in the gorge bans walking along the Málaga-Bobadilla railway to reach the walls, at the request of rail operator Adif, so the descent is on the footpath, never on the tracks.
Who should skip it
Experienced ferrata climbers. At 650 metres and K3 it is short; Málaga province has more than 30 via ferratas open to the public, according to the activity guide of Málaga City Council’s youth department.
Anyone who hates queues. Timing depends on how busy the route is, as Sendero Sur warns, and the bridges take one person at a time.
Travellers who want to keep plans loose. Only La Garganta lets you cancel for free the day before. For other active days out see hiking near Malaga, kayaking to the Maro waterfall and day trips from Malaga.
Is there a night via ferrata at El Chorro
Yes, in summer only. La Garganta runs a full-moon via ferrata in July and August, from 52 euros, lasting about 3 hours, with a headlamp added to the kit; next summer’s dates go out through its newsletter. The same age rules apply: nobody under 11, and an adult with anyone aged 12 to 17.
Check the return before booking: the last train to Málaga leaves El Chorro at 21:07, so a night session means a car, a taxi or a bed in El Chorro.
El Chorro via ferrata FAQ
Do via ferrata guides at El Chorro speak English?
La Garganta and Horizon Naturaleza y Aventura both list Spanish and English as guiding languages, and OcioAventura Cerro Gordo runs its booking pages in English. Sendero Sur Aventura and Guadalterra Aventura do not state a language, so ask when you book.
How do I get to the El Chorro via ferrata without a car?
Take a Renfe regional or Intercity train from Málaga María Zambrano to El Chorro-Caminito del Rey. The first leaves at 9:05 and arrives at 10:02, and the last one back leaves El Chorro at 21:07. La Garganta’s meeting point is about 100 metres from the platform.

Can I do the Caminito del Rey and the via ferrata on the same day?
Only with an afternoon slot. Each takes 3 to 4 hours, so walk the Caminito in the morning, join OcioAventura Cerro Gordo’s spring session from 16:00 to 20:00 and take the last train at 21:07, which reaches Málaga at 21:54.
What should I wear for the El Chorro via ferrata?
Sports or hiking clothes, trainers or boots in good condition, and water, as La Garganta and Horizon ask. Helmet and harness are provided. Gloves help on the cables: Guadalterra Aventura and Sendero Sur Aventura include them, and in summer a cap and sun cream matter.
Is there a night via ferrata at El Chorro?
Yes, in July and August only. La Garganta runs a full-moon via ferrata from 52 euros, about 3 hours long, with a headlamp included. The last train to Málaga leaves El Chorro at 21:07, so a night session needs a car, a taxi or a bed in El Chorro.
Pick the outfitter by your train home and your teenager’s age; the ten-euro price gap is the least of it.
