A 15-year-old in Málaga can book an escape room without a parent, but cannot walk the Caminito del Rey or paddle to the Maro waterfall without one. That split, not the price, is what decides a family’s week. Teen activities around Málaga are spread along the C-1 airport train line, at El Chorro station 51 to 57 minutes inland, and at the Campillos go-kart track.
What can teenagers do in Malaga? From 14, drive a kart at Campillos for €22 per 10 minutes and play Game Over escape rooms without an adult. From 12, climb the El Chorro via ferrata, from €55. From 8, walk the Caminito del Rey, for €10. Those two and the Maro kayak tour require an adult until 17.
For a visiting family the second filter is distance. The C-1 train runs from Málaga Airport to Benalmádena, for the cable car, in about 18 minutes, while El Chorro is a 51 to 57-minute regional train ride from María Zambrano station and the kart track is 78 km away by road. Under-18s also need their own passport on the Caminito.
Which activities a teen can do alone and which need a parent
The El Chorro via ferrata turns away anyone under 11 and requires an adult with every climber aged 12 to 17. On the Caminito del Rey the same rule applies from 8, and the guided kayak tour to the Maro waterfall from 4, so on all three the parent walks, climbs or paddles too, and pays.
Karting is the first thing a teenager can do on their own: the KC kart from 14 and the KC+, at 95 km/h, from 16, both with parental consent. In town, Game Over lets anyone from 14 play without an adult in the team, and the trampolines at Altitude only need one under 7. The 110 km/h competition kart and nightclubs start at 18, and the Theatro club at 21.
How to get there from Málaga and the airport without a car
Four of the seven activities sit on a railway line, and the airport is closer to the cable car than the city centre is.
| Activity | Public transport | Journey | Last return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Benalmádena Cable Car | C-1 to Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel | 18 min from the airport, 30 from the centre | 12.33am |
| Aqualand Torremolinos | C-1 to Torremolinos | 21 min from the centre | 12.43am |
| Caminito del Rey and via ferrata | regional train from María Zambrano | 51 to 57 min | 9.07pm |
| Maro kayak tour | ALSA bus to Nerja | 1 h 25 min | 9.55pm |
| Selwo Aventura | bus to Marbella, then Avanza line L-79 | two buses | check Avanza’s timetable |
| Campillos go-karts | car | 78 km | n/a |
The C-1 runs about every 20 minutes through the day, and a contactless bank card works at the gates: tap in and tap out, or Renfe charges the maximum fare. Zones are explained in the Málaga Cercanías trains, and other ways to move around in getting around Málaga.
Adrenaline day out by train, the Caminito del Rey and El Chorro via ferrata
The Caminito del Rey and the El Chorro via ferrata both start from El Chorro-Caminito del Rey station, served by regional trains from Málaga María Zambrano. Renfe’s October timetable has departures at 9.05am, 9.43am, 1.26pm, 3.43pm and 5.08pm, plus a Sunday train at 3.27pm, and the last train back leaves at 9.07pm.
The walk itself covers 8 km and 3 to 4 hours including the access paths, of which the boardwalks take about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is one-way and finishes at El Chorro, so train users ride the €2.50 shuttle to the north entrance first. Entry costs €10, or €18 with an official guide, and visitors must be at the entrance 30 minutes before their slot. Booking windows are explained in the Caminito del Rey from Málaga.
The El Chorro via ferrata, run by La Garganta, costs from €55 with guide and gear, is graded K3 and needs no previous experience. It starts at the reception of Hotel-Restaurante La Garganta, 100 metres from the platform, lasts 3 to 4 hours and needs at least 2 climbers, which a teen and parent already make. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
A day at El Chorro by train runs in this order:
- Outward train. Take the 9.05am regional train from María Zambrano, which arrives at 10.02am.
- Start point. For the Caminito, ride the shuttle to the north entrance and be there 30 minutes before the booked slot; for the via ferrata, walk the 100 metres to La Garganta.
- Return. Be back at the station by the evening: the last train to Málaga leaves at 9.07pm and arrives at 9.54pm.
Go-karting at Campillos, the one plan that needs a car
KartCenter Campillos is on the A-384 road at km 101, with a 1,580-metre track, and there is no direct train from Málaga to Campillos. The track is also 4.6 km from the village station.
| Kart | Minimum age | 10 minutes | 15 minutes | 10 + 15 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KC, 270 cc, 85 km/h | 14 years | €22 | €32 | €50 |
| KC+, 390 cc, 95 km/h | 16 years | €28 | €38 | €60 |
From October to May it opens 10am to 7pm on weekdays and from 9am at weekends. Groups of 6 or more can book a Mini Grand Prix, with qualifying and a 15-minute race, for €45 a driver in KC karts. Sessions are not private: the track says drivers share it with others unless one booking fills every kart.
Water plans, the Maro kayak and Aqualand, and when they stop
Educare Aventura runs the guided kayak tour from the far end of Burriana beach in Nerja to the Maro waterfall, 2.5 hours in all. From June to September it costs €35 per adult and €23 for ages 8 to 15; at 16 a teen pays the adult rate, and everyone must be able to swim. The 2-hour scooter snorkel takes ages 12 and up, for €40 in summer.
Educare requires an adult with every paddler under 18, whatever resale listings say about 14-year-olds going alone. October has no published price for the guided tour, so it is quoted on booking, while a 2-hour kayak hire costs €24. Lifeguards on Nerja’s beaches stop at the end of September. Full details in the Nerja kayak to the Maro waterfall.
Aqualand Torremolinos is 925 metres in a straight line from Torremolinos station. An adult ticket costs €37 online and €39 at the gate; the park does not state the age at which the child rate ends, so ask when buying. In October it opens Tuesday to Saturday, and it closes from 1 November to 31 March. More in Aqualand Torremolinos.
Cable car and Selwo Aventura zipline on the coast
The Benalmádena Cable Car charges adult fares from age 8: €17.90 online and €21.90 at the ticket office. It is a views trip up Monte Calamorro, open 11am to 6pm in October, and a one-way ticket from €10.90 suits teens who want to walk down. Next to it, the old Tivoli World amusement park is still shut. Prices in the Benalmádena cable car.
Selwo Aventura, near Estepona, charges ages 8 to 64 from €19.90 online and €29.90 at the gate, and opens 10am to 6pm until 2 November. The draw for a teenager is the Ziwa zipline, 116 metres over the lake, for riders of 40 to 90 kg. It runs only on Saturdays and Sundays and is paid for separately at the Bazar Natura shop inside. Getting there without a car is covered in Selwo Aventura from Málaga, and other full-day outings in day trips from Málaga.
Which activities run in English, and what ID to bring
Game Over, about 213 metres from Málaga-Centro Alameda station, runs every escape room in English, from €27 a head for two players to €20 in groups of six to eight. Gabinete Escarlata plays only in Spanish. Official guided visits on the Caminito run in Spanish and English for €18, in groups of up to 30.
Bring the teenager’s passport. Visitors under 18 on the Caminito del Rey must carry an ID card, a passport or an equivalent document at all times, and the karting track asks for parental consent for every driver under 18.
Evenings without alcohol, and why clubs are off the list
Spanish evenings run late, which suits teenagers. Bowling 80 stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and charges €3.50 on Wednesdays, Altitude trampolines run until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays from €11 an hour, and Game Over plays until 11.30pm at weekends. Wednesday cinema tickets cost €6.90 at Yelmo and mk2, with films in original version daily.
Nightclubs are not an option: Sala Gold, Amazonia and Santa Rita ask for 18, and Theatro for 21, as listed in Malaga nightclubs. The Museo Picasso Málaga is free for under-17s every day, an easy rainy-afternoon fallback, as the Picasso Museum explains. Bowling and escape rooms are compared in bowling in Málaga and escape rooms in Málaga.
What may bore a teenager or annoy the parents
The cable car is a look-and-ride-back plan, and Selwo Aventura on a weekday has no zipline and its archery range is temporarily closed. Its upper area shuts at 5pm, an hour before the rest of the park.
Parents carry the effort: on the Caminito, the via ferrata and the kayak they cover the 8 km, the rock face or the 2.5 hours of paddling themselves. The kayak tour is cancelled with a full refund when the sea is rough, and karting means 78 km of driving for 10 minutes on track. Meals with younger siblings are easier with kid-friendly restaurants in Málaga, and toddlers change the plan entirely, as Malaga with kids shows. For an adult group, see Malaga with friends.
