The Guadalmedina, Malaga's dry river and why it is dry

El Perchel and La Trinidad sit where they do because the river marked the edge of the walled city, and they paid for it in the flood of 23 September 1907, which killed 21 people. The Agujero dam was finished in July 1924 and El Limonero went up between 1979 and 1983 downstream of it.

A royal decree signed on 29 April 1927 ordered the correction and replanting of an entire river basin in Malaga. The Guadalmedina is a highly seasonal river whose urban channel is usually dry, and upstream reservoirs now regulate the basin and reduce the flood surges that once reached the city. The problem was never the water. It was the slopes.

Why does the Guadalmedina river have no water? Because its basin is regulated upstream by dams built after the great floods. The Agujero reservoir was finished in July 1924 and El Limonero between 1979 and 1983, a few kilometres further down the same river. The flood of 23 September 1907 killed 21 people and took the Aurora, Santo Domingo and railway bridges.

The slopes, and the sixteenth century

The river was not always a hazard. What changed was not the watercourse but its catchment.

Deforestation began in the sixteenth century, after Malaga passed to the Crown of Castile. Once the original woodland went, the slopes were left without protection against torrential rainfall, and that is where the erosion starts which turns a heavy storm into a surge capable of taking bridges with it.

Before that the river behaved differently: it ran gently, dried out more or less in summer, watered the market gardens around the city and filled the wells that supplied its population. That is why the basin still matters for understanding the city’s water, a subject covered in where Malaga’s water comes from, and why the Montes de Málaga natural park, on the left bank of this basin, began life as a reforestation scheme rather than a recreational space.

The dams, and one decree that was not a dam

The Agujero reservoir appears as finished in July 1924, according to the culture department’s archive, and its project had been presented in 1908 by the Malaga engineer Manuel Jiménez Lombardo.

The least known piece was not a dam at all. A royal decree of 29 April 1927 approved the correction and replanting of the Guadalmedina basin, an intervention on the territory rather than the channel.

The last large piece is El Limonero, on the same river a few kilometres below the Agujero. Work ran from 1979 to 1983, and the archive holds aerial photographs from 1982 documenting its construction.

One limit worth declaring: no capacity, height or official use figures for El Limonero appear here, because the numbers in circulation disagree and none was verified against an official record. What is documented is the sequence and its dates.

The 2026 agreement, and a sequence still running

A hydraulic study completed in April 2025 sits behind the most recent move on this channel. Its stated objective is to minimise flood risk in a densely populated urban area, by improving the channel’s capacity and managing sediment while adapting to the effects of climate change.

The Andalusian Consejo de Gobierno turned that into an agreement declaring the works of interest to the Autonomous Community, covering the 1.70 kilometres between the Armiñán and Perchel bridges, on 11 March 2026.

Reading the channel from the bridge

Three things are visible without any technical knowledge, and between them they tell the whole story.

  1. The width of the channel, out of proportion for a river with no water, because it is sized for the surge and not the ordinary flow.
  2. The retaining walls, which turn a river into an urban canal and are the physical translation of the orders that followed 1907.
  3. The position of the districts: El Perchel and La Trinidad developed on the far side of the river, whose course marked the edge of the walled city.

The channel is not badly designed. It is designed for a day that has already happened.

That emptiness has everyday consequences. It is the reference line separating the centre from the far bank, and it turns up more often than visitors expect.

What the 1907 flood took with it

That regulation exists for a reason with a date: 23 September 1907.

The Guadalmedina crosses the Montes de Málaga park before reaching the Mediterranean in the city itself, and it has historically divided the urban area in two.

The river has historically split the city in two, according to the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Málaga, which holds a documentary collection devoted to it. On one bank sits the historic centre, on the other the districts of El Perchel and La Trinidad, connected for centuries by a handful of bridges. The same collection notes that “the Guadalmedina has caused several catastrophes in the city”.

On 23 September 1907 the river failed to absorb a cloudburst and broke its banks. Contemporary accounts record that the surge destroyed the Aurora, Santo Domingo and railway bridges, killed 21 people and wrecked homes, shops and workshops, with El Perchel and La Trinidad among the worst-hit districts.

Alfonso XIII ordered works to prevent further flooding, and that instruction opens the century of engineering behind today’s channel.

Worth separating the sources: the casualty figure and the lost bridges come from consistent contemporary accounts rather than an archive document read for this article. What is held publicly is the photographic record of the flood taken by the French consul.
