Málaga Cake Shops, and Why Almost Nobody Delivers

Collection is the default here and delivery the exception, and several shops topping the search results bake in Valencia or Granada. LaMaruja collects at Calle Hermes 10 in Teatinos, FreeBakery works Monday to Friday only, and prices run from about 30 to 75 euros with 48 hours notice.

Ordering a cake in Málaga catches visitors out for a reason that has nothing to do with the cake. Collection is the default and delivery is the exception, so the shop has to be reached in person, at a fixed hour, on a fixed day.

Do cake shops in Málaga deliver? Most do not. LaMaruja Bakery states that cakes are collected at Calle Hermes 10, in Teatinos, and gluten-free FreeBakery works to collection only, Monday to Friday. Pepina Pastel does ship, but from Valencia, and asks for 48 hours notice. Prices run from about 30 to 75 euros depending on servings.

A cake shop with its own obrador bakes on its own premises, and in Málaga those sit alongside businesses that ship in from another province: Pepina Pastel trades from Valencia and La Tarta de la Madre de Cris began in Granada. Collection at Teatinos means a round trip across the city, and LaMaruja Bakery asks for 48 hours minimum.

Collection at Teatinos, Not Delivery, Is the Default

This single fact reorganises the whole plan. A cake collected at a workshop in Teatinos is a round trip across the city, not a doorstep arrival, and it has to happen within the shop’s opening hours rather than before the party.

Two consequences follow. Transport matters: the routes and travel card that make that trip work are set out in getting around Málaga, and where Teatinos sits relative to the centre is explained in Málaga neighbourhoods. And timing matters more than in a delivery model, because a shop closing at 19h on a Friday sets the real deadline, not the party.

The exception is the shipped cake, and it comes with its own trade: an arrival window instead of a collection slot.

Which Shops Bake in Málaga

Several businesses ranking well for cakes in Málaga are not Málaga businesses. Pepina Pastel runs its shops in Valencia, at Alzira and Ruzafa, and ships. La Tarta de la Madre de Cris began in Granada and now has a shop on Calle Granada 56. A third address that kept appearing in cake listings no longer has a working website.

None of that makes them worse. It makes their timing different, and timing is the whole game.

What a Cake Costs Here

Prices are published in two incompatible units, which is why comparing them at face value goes wrong. Some shops quote per person and others sell fixed sizes.

The per-person rate published by LaMaruja Bakery starts at 3 euros, giving 32 euros for a cake serving 8 and 66 euros for one serving 20, with decoration charged on top at 5, 10 or 15 euros depending on how bespoke it is. Pepina Pastel sits between 25 and 36 euros, with a fixed 8-serving cake at 30 and a 14-serving one at 36. The per-serving breakdown across shops is in birthday cakes in Málaga.

A wedding cake works differently again, and is broken down per guest in wedding cakes in Málaga. The reference figure published by the industry portal bodas.net for Málaga is around 338 euros, some workshops start from 65, and a 50 per cent deposit on ordering is standard practice.

Traditional counters price by weight or by piece instead. Obrador Tejeros sells its wrapped locas at 25 euros, loose borrachuelos at 16,50 and a small boxed set at 9,50.

The jump on the right is the one to plan for: the typical wedding figure is five times a large birthday cake.

Gluten-Free Means a Different Workshop, Not a Different Recipe

For anyone coeliac the question is not whether a shop offers a gluten-free cake but whether wheat flour enters that workshop at all. Shops working entirely without it say so explicitly.

Nata & Chocolate, at Paseo de Sancha 10 beside La Malagueta, describes a fully gluten-free workshop and accreditation from the Málaga coeliac association. FreeBakery, at Avenida Pedro Salinas 8 in Bailén-Miraflores, works free of gluten and TACC and bakes everything to order, with collection Monday to Friday.

The council’s Servicio de Sanidad y Consumo publishes a separate directory, Málaga sin Gluten, listing 7 bakeries and pastry shops: Despacho de Sabores, El Pastelero Real, FreeBakery, La Pastela de Nora, Pastelería Pathelín, Pathelín Teatinos and Piquito Bakery.

Which of them run dedicated workshops and which only a gluten-free range is set out in gluten-free bakeries in Málaga. Worth cross-checking both, because they do not match. Nata & Chocolate does not appear on that directory despite working entirely gluten-free, so neither list is complete on its own. The same separate-workshop logic applies to ice cream, covered in gluten-free and vegan ice cream in Málaga.

The Old Houses and What Each Is Known For

Confitería Aparicio was founded by Alfonso Aparicio in the Capuchinos district in 1941 and is now run by the second generation. Its signature product is the torrija, of which local press credits it with up to 80.000 units sold during Lent, made with enriched dough instead of plain bread. That season is the one described in Holy Week in Málaga.

Obrador Tejeros, open since 1975 at Calle Obispo Salvador de los Reyes 7, presents itself as the specialist in locas, the puff-pastry round with custard and a glacé cherry that is the city’s most recognisable sweet. Its published hours are Monday to Friday, 9h to 19h.

Lochi rounds out the local repertoire with borrachuelos, buñuelos and torrijas from its own workshop, and which house is known for which sweet is set out in traditional Málaga patisseries. The breakfast version of the loca, and where to eat one sitting down, is covered in breakfast in Málaga. Packaged local sweets as gifts sit alongside the province’s protected labels in Málaga food products to buy.

Lent and 6 January, the Two Dates That Book Out

Lent brings the torrijas, with Aparicio as the volume benchmark. Christmas and 6 January bring the roscón, and there the problem is not choosing but arriving in time, because workshops that bake to order sell out days before Epiphany, as set out in the roscón de Reyes in Málaga. The wider seasonal programme is in Christmas in Málaga.

Outside those two windows the city’s sweets are bought without any appointment at any neighbourhood counter, and the municipal markets keep their own stalls, with opening hours in the food markets of Málaga.

Frequently Asked Questions About Málaga Cake Shops

Do cake shops in Málaga deliver?

Most do not. LaMaruja Bakery states plainly that cakes are collected from its workshop at Calle Hermes 10 in Teatinos, and gluten-free FreeBakery works to collection only, Monday to Friday. Pepina Pastel does ship, but from Valencia.

How far in advance should you order a cake in Málaga?

Forty-eight hours is the common minimum, both at LaMaruja Bakery and for Pepina Pastel shipments. Elaborate designs need about a week, and a wedding cake is counted in months rather than days.

Which Málaga cake shops bake in the city?

Confitería Aparicio, Obrador Tejeros, Lochi, LaMaruja Bakery in Teatinos, Nata & Chocolate in La Malagueta and FreeBakery in Bailén-Miraflores all bake in Málaga. Pepina Pastel started in Valencia and La Tarta de la Madre de Cris in Granada.

Where can you buy gluten-free cake in Málaga?

Nata & Chocolate at Paseo de Sancha 10 and FreeBakery at Avenida Pedro Salinas 8 both run fully gluten-free workshops. The council’s Málaga sin Gluten directory separately lists seven gluten-free bakeries and pastry shops.

What is the oldest cake shop in Málaga?

Confitería Aparicio, founded by Alfonso Aparicio in the Capuchinos district in 1941, is over 80 years old and described by local press as the oldest workshop in the centre. It sells up to 80.000 torrijas during Lent.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

Prices here are the ones each business publishes, and in small bakeries they move, so treat them as an order of magnitude rather than a quote.

Three things settle the plan before flavour enters the conversation: the exact collection time, because of the eight shops listed only Tejeros and the two that ship send anything out; the number of servings, since 8 servings cost 32 euros at LaMaruja and 30 at Pepina but one is collected in Teatinos and the other travels; and the type of workshop if there are allergies, not just the type of cake.

In Málaga a cake is chosen by calendar first and by taste second.
